Mr. Hogan is a major part of The Clubhouse Bistro and Bar DNA. He is a major inspiration to the heartbeat of The Clubhouse.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING
This page usually posts historical events in the life of Mr. Hogan, but because it is the beginning of the Holiday season, please allow me to imagine what could have been if Mr. Hogan had the opportunity to compete in the four major golf tournaments, every year, throughout his career.

THIS IS FAIR WARNING – DO NOT READ ON IF YOU BECOME FRUSTRATED WITH HYPOTHETICALS.

If you don’t mind, please let me present to you the following which may influence you on how you consider Mr. Hogan in his place of golf history.

In the 30-year span (1937 – 1967) in Ben Hogan’s career he played in only of 58 major tournaments, while today’s golfers can play in 120 majors in their 30-year careers.

Mr. Hogan did not have the chance to play in 62 majors due to World War II, injuries from his head-on collision with a bus, qualification standards, or travel restraints. The following majors he missed include the following:

• 6 US Opens (1938, 1943 – 1945, 1949 and 1957)
• 6 Masters (1937, 1943 – 1945, 1949 and 1963)
• 21 PGA’s (1938, 1943 – 1945, 1949 – 1959, 1961 - 1963, 1966 and 1967)
• 29 Open Championships (1937 – 1952, 1954 – 1967).

That’s 62 majors that he did not have the opportunity to participate in his career, where he certainly would have been a heavy favorite to win most of them and would have been in the mix for the others. It is not unreasonable to assume that given his ~20% success rate in major tournaments he would have won 12 of those events. Add that to the 10 majors he won (we, of course count the 1942 Hale American National Open – the unofficial war-time substitute for the US Open as one of his majors), for a total of 22. Let us not forget that during his day the three North and South Opens and the two Western Opens he won were considered majors by the tour players. That is a grand total of 27 majors!!!

That beats the record that Jack Nicklaus holds for the most majors in a career (even if we count his 2 US amateur victories). It will be highly implausible for anybody to match or beat that record.

Considering the number of major victories Ben won in the limited number of opportunities he had compared to the opportunity’s modern day (post 1960) golfers have had, it is not a stretch to give consideration for the title of GOAT (The Greatest of All Time) to Mr. Hogan.

He was described during his introduction into the Texas Hall of Fame as “the greatest golfer to have ever lived” – an apt description as I have ever heard.
