Our Story
We've been asked about the teak garden house aka "the wee hus" in the Wolk Folk Garden where some of our garden concerts are held. 6661 N. Forkner Ave. Fresno 93711
Pat Wolk's nephew David Sussman owner of Gado Gado International in Santa Rosa had it designed and built for her in Bojonegoro, East Java. He delivered it to us and was the "contractor."
Members of the FFS came together on Friday evening to unload the truck then the following morning the work began. It was a joyful community happening with each contributing according to their gifts: food preparers (breakfast, lunch, and dinner); hauling, lifting, positioning. Rather than describe it,here is the dvd we made of the process. It was completed in 12 hours then the jam session began. You can see the production in a two part youtube video https://youtu.be/45Zy9-tojLc
The style is a cross between a "limasan" (middle class) and a "kampung" (village) house. You see many of these in the countryside of west & east Java, ranging from as small as 10' x 10' and up to 40' x 25'. It is constructed in mortise and tenon fashion of reclaimed teak planks & timbers from several houses that were 60-100 years old.
Some Indonesian terms:
Angin Angin (wind-wind) = the open carved area above the windows.
Wuwung is the name of the top pieces on the roof.
Majapahit--Carved roof ornament. Stylized fish from 5th century tradition. Used to prevent mischievous spirits from annoying residents.
Sirap = roof.
Come and enjoy concerts in the garden. Bring your own concert seating. There's plenty of room.
