I’m not one to edit every image in a gallery in color and black and white. I know some photographers do, but I’m not one of them.

I’m actually pretty selective about which particular images get converted into black and white and which stay in color. For me, black and white images must convey a certain mood, expression or feeling.

More often than not the ones that get converted are full of big belly laughs, humongous grins or even some sadness and tears. I guess you could say that I save black as white for the images that show the MOST emotion. Because when you strip a photo down, it’s the emotion that you see the most.

Just a reminder - your child doesn’t need to be cheesy smiling in a photograph to make it stunning. Some of my favorite portraits are those of children looking intensely into my camera, or serenely calm, or just being themselves.

Of course I always do try and get a natural smile out of them as well 😉

I’m finding myself so drawn to these simple, classic children’s portraits these days. Maybe it’s because I’ve been in Spring School picture mode for the past month. Maybe it’s because there is something to refreshing, so beautiful about a classic portrait.

Those sweet, overwhelming, busy, tired, beautiful first few weeks of having a newborn. There’s nothing else like it ❤️ What a gift it is to be able to bottle up this precious time, and document these lasting memories.

Try as I might, I find myself losing those small details of these first weeks in my memory. Her smell, her noises, her sweet big sister not quite understanding what was going on but knew it was something big.

You’ll never regret photographing your newborn and your newly expanded family during this special time. Will it be hectic? Probably. Will you be tired? Definitely. But it’s all worth it to capture and document these memories.

I just learned that this beautiful spot at Alpine Groves Park is ripped to shreds 😭 Well, the trees in the background and everything to the left is ok. The fence and foliage on the right along the river is totally gone.

I know they removed it to reinforce the river shoreline and secure it for years to come. And I’m hoping that they leave it looking better than ever. But dang I’m going to miss photographing here for the foreseeable future 🥺

Has anyone else been over to this park lately?? It’s one of my favorite spots in SJC!

I have LOTS of games that I play with families that I photograph to inspire laughter and connection. One of my favorites to use with toddlers is to have them tell the person they are with (mom, dad, sibling, grandparents - you get the idea) a “silly secret”.

99% of the time they tell them something that involves potty words 🤣💩🚽

This is fun for the toddlers because they get to do something silly and use words usually not allowed, and not get in trouble for it! It’s fun for parents to see what their child comes up with. And it’s fun for me because y’all - toddlers are crazy and come up with the weirdest things to say 🤣🤣

Tips on how to have a successful family photo session:

HAVE FUN!

That’s it. Yes, clothing and location make up about 10% of what makes a photo great but the other 90%...that is all on you!

Genuinely love on your kids/partner, have fun, ENJOY the hour with your family and create some new memories while you’re at it. Don’t worry about their hair or expression or the wind. Let ME worry about that.

You just worry about loving on your loves and I promise you’ll have amazing photos.

Last session of 2023 and first post of 2024! Y’all when I tell you this family were troopers during the cold weather we had for their season, they were troopers! I’m all bundled up in 2 jackets and a hat 🤣 They’re in beautiful summer dresses and barely any complaints 🥰 Just a friendly reminder that it does get COLD here in Jax in the winter months!
