ALBANY - Five LCAA grapplers are heading to the NYS Wrestling Championships at the MVP Arena in Albany next weekend with a combined season record of 249 wins against just 16 losses.
Now that’s impressive.
Dansville/Way-Co’s Wyatt Sartori (99 pounds), Letchworth’s Joe Scott (108) and Perry’s Noah Leitten (160) all earned automatic berths after winning Section V’s Supersectional Division II titles while Avon/Geneseo’s James Chase (124) and Perry’s Holden Kelly (131) qualified after finishing second in their respective weight classes.
Sartori, just an eighth-grader is currently 42-2 on the season (87-6 career) and will be making his second trip to Albany.
He nipped Bolivar-Richburg’s Teegan Sibble 4-3 in the Super finals.
Head coach Justin Walker feels the experience of last year’s tournament will benefit Sartori greatly.
“Wyatt heads into this season’s tournament much more prepared as well as much more knowledgeable after being there last year,” coach Walker said. “We spoke the other night and this year is much more different for him mentally. He went to the tournament last year excited to be a part of it, but this season he's here concentrating on making a statement.”
Scott, a Letchworth eighth-grader, is undefeated on the season at 43-0 (82-12 career) and has put together 23 pinfalls, seven tech falls, four major decisions and three decisions during the season.
Scott is also making a return trip [ to Albany after placing seventh last year.
“I think being on that podium last year gave him a little taste of success, along with an elevated goal in mind for the next season,” Letchworth coach Weston Weaver said. “That has seemed to fuel him through the off-season. He went right back to work last spring and throughout the summer. We've been really grateful to see his hard work, sacrifice, and commitment pay off for him so far this year. Wrestling is a tough sport with very little glory. Many kids do everything right each and every day but for various reasons are unable to reach their goals. When you have a wrestler who is fortunate enough to be in the position that Joe is, it's really exciting. Joe has continued to work hard throughout this entire season and we are looking forward to him competing in Albany again this year."
Chase, the third eighth-grader from the LCAA to qualify for Albany, is a familiar name to the sport of wrestling as his father Dan earned a spot on the podium back in 2001, finishing fifth at 152 pounds as a grappler from Rush Henrietta.
James is currently 37-3 on the season (68-12 career) and all three of his losses have come against state reps, including two L’s from HF-L’s Christopher Noto, and one from Division I rep Richard Wood, of Brockport.
“I'm very proud of James and his performance over the past two weeks,” Avon/Geneseo coach Andy Englert said. “He works hard in the practice room and is willing to put in the time. He is always looking to improve his skills. I feel he is peaking at the right time and is looking forward to the experience at States.”
Perry has two standouts bidding for the podium next week.
Kelly, a junior, has enjoyed a tremendous season on the mats going 38-6 (146-29 career).
Kelly is a two-time sectional and LCAA champion.
Leitten, a senior, is 44-1 on the season (166-41 career) with his only loss in 2023-24 coming against Canisteo-Greenwood’s Beau Zeh, an opponent he would defeat in last week’s Supersectional finals, winning by a pinfall in 2:11.
Leitten is a three-time LCAA champion and two-time sectional champ.
Head coach Phil Leitten says his two boys are ready to make some noise in the capital city.
“We are very excited to return to the state championship for the second season in a row for these two,” coach Leitten said. “The boys are hoping to make some noise aiming for the podium. I can’t stress enough the work they put into this season by pushing each other in practice. They are definitely the best two-practice partners I have coached so far. I’m very confident that they will make the Perry Wrestling family proud and reach the podium.”
