“This is the best part. The best part of anything really. It’s the moment before it starts.”

This is one of my favorite moments of a wedding. The moment before the doors to the reception open. It is when a couple’s vision is complete and ready to be revealed. It is when it is unscathed and untouched. It is the moment where I get to look around and see the colors and how they blend. It is where I can feel the textures of the fabrics. It is where I can smell the scents of the candles and floral. It is where I get to see how our furniture blends in with the space. It is where I can see how the lighting we chose for our couples syncs with the palette in the room. And finally, it is where I can see how the music matches the image in front of me.

This is the moment where I will hold my mic in my hand, close my eyes, and envision the next few hours for our couple and their guests. And when the doors open and the guests get their first look at the space, this is when it all begins. This is where the magic begins.

I was driving around today, listening to Jimmy Eat World’s album, Bleed American, and the song “Hear You Me” came on. It is a beautiful, acoustic ballad placed right after arguably one of their best songs, “Sweetness”. It breathes that classic 2000’s emo record along with the lines of Dashboard Confessional.

I don’t get to play the song often as it doesn’t exactly scream “wedding material” but I do enjoy listening to it in the truck. When I heard it today, it reminded me of a time in my life where I wanted to be that person that selected the songs that would be used in movies. I think the technical term is Music Supervisor. Nothing glorious. Should probably say Master Soundscape Artist. I think it sounds more appropriate. Agreed?

Anyways, I loved finding music that truly embodies what our eyes are seeing. Many moons ago, before all of this, I would turn on my old iMac bubble, open up iMovie, rip off YouTube videos of tv shows I enjoyed watching, and make music videos from them. “Hear You Me” earned its rightful place on one of my favorite shows, Lost. It was the scene where Shannon runs in the jungle rain looking for Walt and she is shot. Sayid, holding her in his arms, professes his love and loses her all in the same moment. When I made that video using the song and actual sounds from the scene, it was incredible. Sayid professes his love during the acoustic interlude. A shot rings out and the apex of the song hits. My cuts and timing of that scene were impeccable.

My movie editing career from decades ago has come to end, but the passion and artistry to shape a scene with the perfect song lives on. I love when my couples give me the freedom to hand pick and sometimes even create the perfect song for each of their moments. And I look forward to the day that I’m known for that alone. True artistry in its beauty.

Staying with the B & W for a minute because it’s classic.

I had written a whole post on the sacredness of all the parts of your wedding because, well, all those details are special to you and your love.

It was really good, but then my app froze for a minute and it was all gone.

So I will sum it up by this. Details of your day are the expression of the love you have created together. They do matter. So what if the flowers die and the ink on the invites fade. The feeling of those fleeting moments when you’re surrounded by all your favorite flowers, hearing your favorite music, wearing your dream wedding attire with all your favorite people watching as you meet up with your beloved to say your vows…..that feeling remains. Love is everything. ♾️🩷💜💙

Hey you…

My name is Jeff. When I look back at the photos that took of me, this is one of my favorites. Why? Because it speaks a lot about who I am. Let me explain.

When I was younger, I found that I would slip into deep, long periods of joy and sorrow. Days, weeks sometimes (still do). It was always triggered by overly, emotion driven moments that would happen because or to people around me. I would often react oppositely. If someone seemed overtly joyful, I became deeply quiet. If others seemed down, I was coming hot with energy. It wasn’t intentional, just a strange part of me. Exhausting to be honest…pretty much a living example of yin-yang.

During the later part of our planning process with our couples, I ask when do you listen to music? Do you listen to it when you’re feeling joy, sorrow, anger, fear, or all the above? For me, it was all of the above. Music helped, and still helps, me get through all those various swings I find myself in. Some of my favorite songs aren’t ones that are lyrically the most appropriate for weddings. Ben Folds Five “Brick”, Goo Goo Doll’s “Name”, or Pearl Jam’s “Nothingman”. All incredible acoustic ballads. I’ll listen to these songs until my ears bleed and I feel every ounce of sadness leave my body.

One of the other questions I ask is what is your one ride or die song. Not the one you think would work at the wedding, but the song that would be buried with you. Knowing where clients started and where they are now, as well as what stuck with them really begins to define how we plan their wedding entertainment. These days, when given the direction to provide the musical background for formalities like ceremony or cocktail at weddings, I might sneak songs like those in there. They are often instrumentals or covers of. It is my way of acknowledging that my clients have deeper musical tastes than others. That they also experienced a music journey in their life that eventually brought them there.
