FLAG DAY
You're a grand old flag
You're a high-flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave
You're the emblem of
The land I love
The home of the free and the brave
Ev'ry heart beats true
Under red, white and blue
Where there's never a boast or brag
But should old acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the grand old flag

◾️Mimosa’s :beautiful in bloom, disruptive invasive
Impacts: The Mimosa quickly overruns and chokes out native plants and prevent the regeneration of native species.

Additionally, the seeds contain a toxin that can harm animals when ingested

🟡When it comes to an established tree, the U.S. Forest Service recommends cutting it down as an initial control measure. Applying an herbicide to a freshly cut mimosa stump is the only way to kill the tree and prevent it from resprouting.

🟡Invasive species like Mimos’a cause environmental damage by displacing desirable native plants. environmental damage by displacing desirable native plants.

Mimosa (Albizia julibrissin) or Silk Tree is blooming along roadsides, forest margins, and streams. Their fragrant, pompom-like flowers make them easy to spot in late May and June. Mimosa is native to China and has been widely planted as an ornamental. Unfortunately, it readily escapes yards and invades natural habitats far away from where they were planted in a yard. For instance, I photographed this Mimosa at a land conservation park in my area.

Mimosa is listed as an invasive tree in several southeastern states (SC, GA, KY, VA, and TN are a few examples). Much of its spread is into sunny disturbed areas, woodland edges, streambanks, and rights-of-way. Once established, Mimosa re-sprouts from its roots, making it difficult to eradicate. The fruits and seeds are dispersed by the wind and also float on water, sending seeds from neighborhoods into street gutters and down storm drains where Mimosa then spreads downstream. Unfortunately, Mimosa has become a common, and sometimes dominant tree in many woodland edges and streambanks across the Piedmont. Because most native insect are specialists of native plants, the more Mimosa spreads, the less habitat there is for our native insects. You will occasionally find caterpillars feeding on Mimosa, but they’re often mimosa webworms (Homadaula anisocentra), which are also introduced from China.

While the Mimosa flowers do provide nectar for a short time for some pollinating insects and ruby-throated hummingbirds, there are many native plants that fulfill this role without causing degradation to our southeastern woodlands (our native wildlife survived here long before mimosas were introduced). As with other introduced plants from China and elsewhere, Mimosa has little benefit to our natural food webs as few caterpillars consume the leaves. This means that natural areas invaded by Mimosa have less food available for songbirds and other wildlife native adapted to the southeastern United States. Mimosas simply contribute to a “food desert” for our native wildlife.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

🟡MISSING : Charles Alex Benfield
🔹Alex is active military stationed in California. His hometown is Gastonia .
His family resides in the Belmont area and are friends to many of us.
They are pleading for help as their world has been turned upside down.

🟡Missing -Charles Alex Benfield
▪️Alex is active duty Marines.
▪️He is currently stationed at Camp Pendleton ,Unit 1/11.

🔹Address of last seen location:
2506 Market Street, San Diego, CA

🔹NOT A DANGER TO HIMSELF OR OTHERS!!
▪️Alex was last seen in San Diego on April 14th at a recovery center around 11:30 am.
He had been picked up by the police the night before due to public intoxication. Then taken to a recovery center. After self release from the center he left to look for his phone that he had lost the night prior.
If anyone knows anything about his whereabouts please contact the number provided below (photo)

🔴Cpl. Charles Benfield, a field artillery cannoneer assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, did not report for duty the morning of April 15 following weekend liberty in the San Diego area. The 15th MEU is aware that Cpl. Benfield was detained by San Diego police April 14 and released later that day.
Once 15th MEU was made aware of his release, marines from cpl. Benfield’s unit searched the downtown San Diego area to try locate him.

The safety and accountability of our Marines and sailors is a top priority. The 15th MEU has requested the assistance of the naval criminal investigative service and will continue to attempt to locate Cpl. Benfield to ensure his wellbeing.”
Benfield’s family says because Alex is active duty and NCIS is investigating, San Diego police cannot declare him a missing person, but that’s not stopping them from sharing their own missing posters on social media.

“I can understand him being scared to show up after missing a meet, but to completely fall off the face of the earth basically is unlike him at all,” Lazo said.
They say Benfield loved his job and just reenlisted for four more years with the Marines this past fall, so they can’t accept that he would choose to abandon his duties.

Lazo says Benfield’s phone is dead, but pinged last at the San Diego Police Department. His financial activity is also raising more questions.
“We were able to find out that his bank has been cleared out. There was no money left in it. There were several big amounts of money taken out at different ATMs,” Lazo said.

When you see dead leaves, dormant stems, or brown parts of leaves, cut them away.
Remove fall and winter leaf debris.
Add a layer of mulch to any potted plant can be a simple and easy way to make plants look more aesthetically appealing and to help keep them healthy. Mulching can also be a great way to conserve soil moisture and to encourage new healthy growth in plants with wilting stems.

When people talk listen completely. Don't be thinking what you're going to say. Most people never listen. Nor do they observe. You should be able to go into a room and when you come out know everything that you saw there and not only that. If that room gave you any feeling you should know exactly what it was that gave you that feeling. ~Ernest Hemingway

The crew at The Village Flower Shop spent-countless hours /years decorating homes ,businesses, churches etc. for holidays. Cindy and I (beginning in 1972) accompanied mother as she designed and decorated many venues for Christmas. During those days we were little shadows , runners / gophers . Barbara had no issue putting one to work at a very young age ,lol.
Our Novembers and Decembers were whirlwinds.. We never gave pause to the fact we worked seven days a week including nights, That’s what our world looked like and we strangely loved every minute of it.
Yes ,I am certain we grumbled and complained. Would we do it all over again? Absolutely!
We lost most of our photos in 2020 , here are the few we have left .
Thankful for those who lent us an open hand throughout the later years. We worked until we were delirious. We enjoyed great experiences together.
We drove the wheels off the old vans. We laughed, sang , all the while not realizing what terrific memories we were creating.

Who doesn’t love to learn a little something about common forest trees in North Carolina?

American holly, sometimes called Christmas holly, occurs sparingly throughout the state, from coastal floodplains to 4,500-foot elevations in the mountains. It grows best on a rich, moist soil but is also found in higher and drier conditions.

It has spiny, wavy-edged, glossy, dark green leaves, which along with its bright red berries, make it highly valued for Christmas decorations. The leaves are green through the winter, and each leaf stays on the tree for three years. They are 2 to 4 inches long, with prominent midribs and veins.

The spherical fruit, produced only on female trees, ripens in the late autumn and remains on the tree over the winter. Each bright red, fleshy berry is attached to a short stalk.

The bark is light gray and roughened by wart-like growths. The tree usually reaches 15 to 40 feet in height and 1 to 2 feet in diameter. The bitter-tasting berries are food for songbirds, deer, wild turkeys and a wide variety of other animals.
