Our Story

Nestled against a backdrop of tall cedars and budding box elders, the Gay Community Center was built in 1936. With the use of Works Progress Administration (WPA) dollars, a federal funding program established in the depression era, the center was designated strictly for entertainment and community fun. Every stone was hand cut and laid with manual labor. The craftsmanship is outstanding. Some Gay residents can recall entertainers such as Flatt and Scruggs, Stringbean, and Grandpa Jones, performing on a stage alit with gas lighting and the building's outdoor plumbing. Once electricity was installed, the center was used as a movie theater. Showings cost 10 cents each. Some of the folks in the community can remember when the movie theater was temporarily shut down after a showing of "Gone With the Wind" upset local pastors. Thanks to a whole lot of neighborly effort in the year 1999 the crumbling building was brought back from decay. The building itself and the tradition of the community and entertainment are alive and continuing today. There is a fund raiser twice a year to support the up keep and repairs of this historical building.
