When I was a child, Memorial Day felt like a historical holiday remembering soldiers fallen in wars that happened generations ago in a bygone era. It seemed so far removed from our day-to-day. My young eyes only saw the old men in faded uniforms. Not the young active duty soldiers they represented. Only until adulthood did I realize the immediacy of the sentiment. Service men and women are putting their lives on the line every day.

So, this Memorial Day, I will remember the soldiers that lost their lives before their time, from wounds seen and unseen. You have my deepest gratitude.

Last weekend while working my booth at the Spring Market in the Park I was chatting with my neighbor. I very kind woman named Christina. She is an employee of Illinois DCFS. Her table was full of information about becoming a much needed foster parent and job opportunities within the organization. I had my 2 boys with me due to an unforeseen turn of events. They were running around and "helping" as much as a 4 and 3 year-old can while I threw snacks at them including bags of chips and fruit snacks. I was left feeling simultaneously self-conscious about my own parenting choices and relief that she "must like kids, right? She works for DCFS..." In the end, everything ended up being more than fine.

When you work an event like a market you get to know your neighbors (especially if you're doing it solo which we both were), typically they are very kind and you chat during slow times, help each other set up your tents or watch each other's stuff if you need to use the restroom or get food. During a lull in the day Christina asked me, "So why flowers?" And this got me thinking. I'll get to the answer in a little bit.

A couple days later I was talking to a friend and fellow small business owner about the multiple hats we wear being entrepreneurs. And I came to the realization how incredibly hard flower farming is. I mean I knew it was hard, but dang! It's so much more than many other businesses. Let's start with the hats. In my business I am the Owner, Purchaser, Accountant, Sales Rep, Photographer, Marketer, Social Media Content Creator, Website Developer, Human Resources, etc. These are all the same for most small businesses starting off. But the unique part of flower farming is I am also the Horticulturalist, Agronomist, Etymologist, Field Hand. And that's just to get the flower to bloom! Then I become the Wholesaler, Florist and Floral Designer. What it comes down to is I am the artist who creates their own paint, the chef who grows all their own ingredients, the carpenter who mills their own lumber.

Every stem variety has been hand selected, sown, transplanted, w**ded, watered, fertilized, harvested, conditioned, and arranged (mind you each variety has different requirements for each step!) before it can make it into your hands. That's if it hasn't been damaged by weather, disease, pests or a sundry of other misfortunes beyond my control.

So back to Christina's question. Why flowers? Why do all of this work for something that is ultimately going to die? Because.

Because smelling the earth and getting my hands dirty feeds my soul in a way nothing else does. Because toiling in the w**ds brings the satisfaction of a job well done far more than sitting in front of a screen. Because since the beginning of time people have used flowers as symbols of love and affection, bringing smiles to one another in moments of joy and sorrow. Because I hope the prayers I pray of love and goodwill over the seeds I sow are felt by the person who enjoys the flowers I grow. That's why, Christina. That's why I grow flowers.

As we count down the weeks until we are open for the season, I wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves. We are the Voss family, the faces behind the flowers.

My name is Megan. I started Voss Farms Cut Flowers in 2021. My mission is to grow florist quality flowers and make them easily available for everyone. It is my belief everyone should have beautiful flowers in their home or workplace, no special occasion required!

My biggest supporter and "yes man" is my husband Brian. Not once has he denied my dream of growing flowers and even helps w**d without a fuss. Together we have 2 boys, Boyd and Clint, who love watering and helping as much as possible.

We will be opening for the season April 28th where you can find us at the Spring Market in the Park in Genoa. I can't wait to see you there!

Thank you for supporting my business, my dreams, and most importantly my family.🩷💐🩷

Greenhouse update:
🌱Everything is looking great! The first round of cool hardy seedlings has reached the "pull-able plug stage." This means their roots fill the cell and leave a clean space when removed from the tray. Although still small they are developed enough to be planted out in the field but not yet root bound. My goal is to get these babies in the ground next week! Not to worry, they thrive in cool temperatures and can even handle some frost.

Meanwhile outside, daffodils have budded up and the tulips have pushed up foliage.

Looking for a way to make your garden "greener" this spring? Check out the rain barrel program from our local DeKalb County Soil and Water Conservation District. Not only are you reducing runoff and storm sewer drainage, but plants LOVE rainwater over what comes out of the tap. 🌿💦

Mother nature sure knows how to take us for a ride! Yesterday, the ranunculus was planted out while this morning was spent in the greenhouse (my favorite place to be) watering seedlings, moving the second round of seed starts up from the basement, and thinning the flats to 1 seedling per cell.
It has been a challenge keeping a moderate temperature in the greenhouse. Warm, bright, sunny days and freezing nights have me constantly checking the thermometer and alternating between pulling panels off to cool it down and turning the heater on so things don't freeze! Regardless, these babies look happy and are putting on some nice growth.

Get out and soak up some sun!

I see green! The first seedlings of the season have sprouted! These are the most cold-hardy annuals: snapdragons, stock, statice, and campanula. They'll live inside this "germination chamber" for a couple more weeks to allow any more seeds to pop up, then move out to the greenhouse where they'll grow on until planting day early April. Each year, propagation space becomes more and more precious. As soon as these trays are removed, new trays will replace them for germination, moved to the greenhouse, replaced, and so on until May. Spring is in the air!

Don't you just love pleasant surprises! Today, I am so grateful for the warm, spring-like weather. The new roof on the greenhouse is thicker, stronger, and more beautiful without the old rotten wood cross supports. The Ranunculus I never pulled up somehow survived the freezing temperatures and is putting on new growth. And my seed order arrived today! It feels better than Christmas! Next up is soaking new Ranunculus corms and starting some seeds!

What pleasant surprises have you had lately?

01/24/2024

Heavy snow load + rain = next week's project.

Seed orders are in! As soon as they arrive, I'll have hands in the dirt and seedlings starting. But first I need to repair my greenhouse roof! Luckily, the rain is supposed to dry up, and temps will be near 40F. New roof panels are in the garage waiting to go up. It's nearly go time!

Man, it's painfully frigid outside! It is during these days of hibernation where all the planning for the upcoming growing season happens. Besides starting seeds, this is one of my favorite parts of flower farming. Organizing seeds, selecting what varieties to grow, when they need to be started, when they need to be planted out, and where they are going to be planted. There is so much optimism and possibility! It's like a puzzle, piecing together what is going to bloom, and when. Although it takes some time to figure out, I definitely don't mind sitting here with my cup of tea, looking at beautiful flowers and dreaming of warmer weather while the ground is covered in snow.
