Springfield Plantation, located along the P*e Dee River in Plantersville, traces its origins to 1729, when Indian trader William Waties acquired a 650-acre tract known as Wehaw. Shortly after, in 1735, Waties sold the property to James Gordon. Ownership of the plantation passed through numerous hands, with many significant figures shaping its history. By 1742, John MacKenzie acquired the estate, beginning a complex lineage of proprietors that reflected the evolving economic and social landscape of South Carolina.

In the late 18th century, the plantation changed hands multiple times, eventually coming under the ownership of Reverend Maurice Harvey Lance in 1834. It was during Lance’s tenure that the plantation was renamed Springfield, and records from this period noted a dwelling and twelve servants' houses on the property. Following Lance’s stewardship, the plantation was acquired by Richard O. Anderson, and later, in 1853, by Charles Cotesworth Pinckney Alston. Alston’s heirs, Charles Pringle Alston and Susan Alston, sold Springfield to Louis Claude Lachicotte in 1897.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Springfield Plantation continued its focus on rice cultivation, a staple crop that defined much of Georgetown County’s agricultural economy. The estate was eventually sold to the Guendalos Rice Company in 1899, and by 1904, James Louis LaBruce transferred ownership to Dudley Pickman. The property remained under various corporate and private ownerships, including Woodlands Plantation, Inc., and, as of 2001, Dr. J. Howard Stokes.

Springfield Plantation is noted for its enduring architectural and agricultural legacy. The plantation’s rice fields and grand oak-lined avenues stand as a testament to its historical significance, while its connections to prominent South Carolina families underscore its role in the region’s development. Privately owned today, Springfield continues to embody the rich cultural and historical tapestry of the Lowcountry.
