Did you know!? Black-eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread are a New Year’s Day tradition with deep roots in African American history, born out of resilience and survival. Black-eyed peas, often seen as a symbol of luck, were brought to the Americas by enslaved Africans and became a vital food source during slavery and reconstruction. Eating them on New Year’s was thought to bring protection and good fortune. Collard greens, with their green color, symbolize money and financial stability, while cornbread’s golden hue represents wealth. These foods were inexpensive, accessible, and a way to make the best of what little was available.

The tradition grew from necessity into a meaningful custom, especially in the South, where food scarcity and hard times were common among Black communities. For many, this meal is not just about superstition—it’s about honoring the struggles of ancestors who turned scraps into a feast and found hope for a better future. Today, it continues as a way to carry forward those hopes for luck, prosperity, and resilience in the year ahead.
