We had a beautiful day for the 3rd Annual SMOKIN' FOR THE VETS hosted by the Sons of the American Legion yesterday.

We are beyond thankful for all of the competition teams that were able to participate! Congratulations to all of the winners, especially the Grand Champion Mess-in-a Round BBQ and Reserve Grand Champion OnlyCans Competition BBQ.

Do you have a worn or tattered US Flag? We have a flag repository at the legion by the basement door in the back parking lot in a refurbished mailbox. Just drop your worn or tattered flag in it.

The flags will be disposed of as properly outlined by the US Flag Code.

Unserviceable Flags Ceremony

The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags

WHEREAS, Such retirement of Flags that have become unserviceable may be done in public with respectful and honorable rites: therefore be it

WHEREAS, Our Flag which we love and cherish

WHEREAS, In a proper service of tribute and memory and love, our Flag becomes faded and worn and must be honorably retired from life; and

WHEREAS, Such retirement of Flags that have become unserviceable may be done in public with respectful and honorable rites: therefore be it

RESOLVED, That The American Legion in convention assembled at Chicago, Illinois, September 18-20, 1944, urge that the National Headquarters use all means to foster and promote through the proper channels, the greater use of the official American Legion Ceremony for the Disposal of Unserviceable Flags as outlined in the Manual of Ceremonies; and be it further

RESOLVED, That Flag Day, June 14, be recommended as the most appropriate day on which to annually hold this ceremony.

So thankful we were able to support this local nonprofit organization who does so such in our community. They make “miracles happen”!

The Germantown American Legion donated a new flag to Chakota so we can retire a tattered flag. The flag was delivered by Sherri Diesen, Legion volunteer. Chakota volunteer, Major Thomas Avolio, of Scott Air Force Base was on hand to accept the flag along with Chakota Manager Niki Kite and Chakota President/Executive Director Barb Johnson.

Also present in the picture is Chakota rider Joseph Avolio, son of Thomas. The Avolio family can be seen volunteering often at Chakota so Joseph can enjoy time with the horses outside his weekly session. We love seeing riders and their families enjoying time together at Chakota.

Memorial Day, a day to honor those who lost their lives while in service to the United States during peace and war.

Memorial Day is not a celebration but a solemn day to reflect on veterans and military personnel who are deceased. Though our fallen are no longer with us, their legacy lives on through the lives they touched.

At 3 p.m. local time today, take a moment to observe the National Moment of Remembrance. For one full minute, pause to remember and respect all the men and women who died in service to our country.

Remember and honor, today and always! ❤️ 🇺🇸 ❤️

May God bless our former prisoners of war — never forget!

April 9 marks National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day. Established in 1988, this day commemorates the surrender of 10,000 U.S. service members and 65,000 Filipino soldiers on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines on April 9, 1942. The Bataan Death March immediately followed the surrender, with U.S. and Filipino service members trekking 65 miles over two weeks under horrendous treatment.

Today, we honor former prisoners of war laid to rest in our hallowed grounds.
