Mr. Groundhog might have seen his shadow, but that didn’t stop us from taking our first steps toward spring production. Today, we soaked and pre-potted our ranunculus corms. Soaking the corms awakens them and prepares them for planting. We placed them in cell trays, where they will sprout and establish roots. With Mother Nature's help, we plan to plant the corms in the ground of our unheated hoop house in March, in hopes of producing beautiful, locally grown ranunculus blooms for May. On cold days like today, we must keep the warmth of spring in mind!

Each January, I like to share the Pantone Color of the Year. Why? It’s trendy, and you’ll see this color pop up in the floral industry (think weddings!) and in fashion and interior design. The 2025 Pantone Color of the Year is Mocha Mousse, a more natural color tone with hues of rich browns, like chocolate mousse. We don’t grow many “mocha-colored” flowers, but we do have one that fits this color tone: Roseanne Brown Lisianthus! Not everyone will be a fan of this flower color, but it’s hues of brown make it a favorite for us! So how about you? Is Mocha Mousse in your color palette?

Now that the Christmas tree is down and the decorations are stored for another year, it’s the perfect time to look ahead to what 2025 has to offer! To start, I want to share a few of my favorite flowers from this past season:

We had a wonderful time at our Glencoe HomeSchool Coop arrangement workshop! It was a treat to host this great group of kids who spent the afternoon crafting beautiful Christmas arrangements. They even delivered their creations as gifts to the residents at Glenfield Nursing Home! With a bit of guidance, they put together some really festive arrangements that brought smiles all around. This was the perfect way to wrap up our workshop season! Great job, kids!

What a fantastic way to wrap up our winter workshops! This past week, we saw so many beautiful spruce containers and wreaths head out from our farm. It was such a special time filled with laughter and joy, thanks to wonderful co-workers, team members, friends, family, and even a birthday celebration! We hope you enjoy your creations throughout the holiday season!🌲

It’s beginning to look a little festive at Milkhouse Flowers! Over the past week, we have been busy harvesting sticks, organizing berries and ribbons, and finally unloading winter greens. We are excited to open our doors on Friday, November 1st, for shopping outdoor greenery and to host our first winter workshop on Saturday, November 2nd!
