Brand Associates is the all-volunteer 501c3 non-profit arm of the Brand Library & Art Center.

The Brand Associates raises funds through memberships and donations to support cultural activities at Brand Library & Art Center. We fully fund the Music Series, Dance Series, REEL Art Film Series, partially fund the children programming, additions to the permanent collection of books and music, and the Summer Plaza Series. We have sponsored and produced the Brand Works on Paper Juried Exhibition

(a national art show) for forty nine years running. 2022 marks the 50th Anniversary of this nationally-recognized exhibition.

Many Robert Brown Award winners in our works-on-paper shows are print makers. That holds true in Brand 52 — Joe Tsambiras won this year for his etching / hand-made watercolor “Picnic I.”

Tsambiras writes, “In my work you will find a manifestation of the way dreams can work: a careful reordering of data where at first things may feel familiar, like early engraved and etched depictions of nature and fantasy. Using this old graphic style can nudge the viewer to accept what is happening in the work before careful observation.”

Winner of the Jane Friend Award in Brand 52, is Nicholas Sitter, for his stunning work, “Floraculture.” Sitter told us the concept, “started as an attempt to take the guerilla attitude of street art and contrast it with a mature technique and a lyrical subject. This tension between the renegade and the poetic, between the destructive and the creative, between graffiti and grace, is what I find exciting about public art and about urban living.”

We offer fun for the whole family at ! Our next Make It! All Ages Craft Program features solar prints. Express yourself while learning to make a unique craft. Our third Brand Associates Award winner, Auberi Zwickel, did indeed transport us with her drawing, This is a Portal to Another Place. It’s a large piece, 30 x 22 in., made with a very small pen, which affirms what Auberi tells us: “I am passionate about drawing as a personal language, ritual practice, and form of deep play.”

We’re sharing with you another image that won an Associates award at Brand 52.

Naomi White () tells us that her “Excavations, 23, (An Expanse from a Narrow Place)” “explores the complicated role the camera plays in our violent world and the way systems of oppression perpetuate the Capitalocene. ... As an artist working at the intersection of ecology and photography, I am critically exploring the world views that allow and perpetuate societal inequality and the relationship of these inequities to the climate crisis. These fissures and cracks make room for connections between the earth and its inhabitants, between the past and future possibilities.”

To celebrate Brand 52 today, we’re featuring a winner of a Brand Associates Award. We recently introduced video to the range of mediums acceptable for entry into the show, and we thought Melissa Dyanne’s 5-plus-minute submission, “Poppies in the Wind,” was exceptional.

The artist writes about her work, “I create paintings, drawings, and mixed media digital artworks. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure up the realms of our imagination.”

The Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper at Brand Library & Art Center is making its debut early this year! The public opening reception is on Saturday, June 15 from 7:00 - 9:00pm.

This year's annual exhibition features more than 100 artworks from around the country chosen by juror Art Critic Shana Nys Dambrot, a renowned art critic, author and curator.

Did you see old friends at BRAND 51 or did you make new ones? On Saturday night hundreds of attendees honored the artists at BRAND 51 Works on Paper exhibit, and celebrated the arts at Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale. Lots of good vibes we’re shared and the night hummed with laughter only to be punctuated by the bossa nova sounds of Sunset Jive that played throughout the evening. The show is open through September 1, 2023. Congratulations to Victoria Arriola who won the Juror’s prize for “Faint Murmurings.” Other artist honorees included Tallmadge Doyle for “Night Bloom,” Marianne Sadowski for “The Fine Line,” Rebecca Youssef for “Agrifolia,” Anne Pearce for “Western Blue,” and Jared Barbick for “Coffin Load Of 9 Left Behind.” All the art in the show can be viewed @brandlibrary website.
