We’ve got an NFR rematch happening tonight. Kolby Wanchuk has Kangaroo Lou in the 2nd round. They matched up together in 2022 at the NFR.

An accident happened before Round 1 last night that most people don't even know about. Finals first-timer Cooper Cooke was pumped for a reunion with Korkow Rodeos' magnificent mare #150 they call Tater Tot, when she bumped into a panel while being loaded out back and was pulled from the draw with a minor cut by her eye. Imagine the excitement Cooper and the Korkow family's excitement for a rematch from the ride in this video last August at the rodeo in Idaho Falls, which resulted in the 88-point W for both parties. You can also imagine the deep disappointment when they all realized in the heat of Rodeo Super Bowl battle that this four-legged warrior woman would not get to take her rightful place on center stage.

Cooper was 79 on his reride horse last night, and didn't place. We'll never know what might have been had they gotten to dance again, or whether or not we might have watched both families on the go-round buckle stage over at the South Point. What I do know after talking this morning to father-and-son stock contractors Jim and TJ Korkow, and also veterinarian extraordinaire Dr. Gregg VeneKlasen...who walks through all of the bucking horses bright and early every morning with 30-year NFR veterinarian Dr. Leslie Schur, is that Dr. Schur stitched up Tater Tot immediately yesterday. And Dr. Leslie told Dr. Gregg this morning that Tater Tot is totally fine, and could be bucked right now if she had the chance.

TJ says Tater Tot will buck Tuesday in Round 6, when the hopper pen returns to the Thomas & Mack. And for the record, this unfortunate incident did not cost the Korkows when it comes to NFR stock contractor show-up fees. I thought stock contractors might get paid by the "out" here, but I was wrong. When they glue that NFR number on those bucking horse and bulls' hips, their owner is cut a flat-fee check for $11,258, regardless of how many times they buck here. While it's impossible to put a price tag on the pride of ownership that comes with watching one of your babies buck here...and there's a buckle and bonus to the winning stock each night...it's great to know that Miss Tater Tot will be back. At this rodeo. And it'll be extra fun for people like me who know this back story to watch her triumphant return.

Kade Bruno had a breakout year in 2023, earning $322,178 and finishing third in the world. In 2024, he spent much of the summer battling Damian Brennan for the top spot before ultimately finishing the season ranked third.

At 24, Bruno will be competing in his third consecutive NFR in 2024, aiming to extend a streak every cowboy dreams of—he’s earned more money each year of his pro career than the last.
