Congratulations to our theatre and dance December 2024 graduates, Roxana Espinosa-Muniz and James O'Hagan-Murphy!

James’s journey to earning his degree at CMU has been anything but traditional. He first began his studies in 1996, enrolling on a full-ride scholarship as an ambassador. Life took him on a detour—leaving school to work, care for his ailing mother and reorient his goals. He returned to CMU a year and a half ago after working professionally to complete his degree. His favorite experiences at CMU include performing in "Three Sisters" and "Amadeus," and forging meaningful connections with students and professors. James plans to apply for MFA programs and explore opportunities with professional and regional theaters. With plans to marry his fiancĂ©e Gabrielle this June, he’s excited for both a personal and professional new chapter.

Roxana began her college career studying dance at 18 but took a break after marrying young. Later, she returned as an adult learner, initially focusing on physical education before rediscovering her passion for dance. She earned her degree in Dance with a minor in Spanish, as well as associate degrees in University Studies and Humanities. Roxana cherishes the connections she’s built through collaborations with peers and opportunities to teach. She plans to balance work, family commitments—including supporting her child’s soccer pursuits—and staying open to new adventures.

CMU’s PRISM concert, featured as part of our 3-day Best of the West music festival, will showcase wind and percussion faculty and student musicians in an event unlike any other. Performers will present a variety of genres and ensemble sizes and types from over 10 different locations throughout Asteria Theatre. In the span of about 90 minutes, audience members will absorb more than 30 short musical acts presented from the main stage, balconies, and aisles, culminating in a surround-sound performance by the Mavroon Platoon drumline and the Maverick Stampede marching band.

Guerrilla Fanfare aims to bring levity and fun to any situation, and to bring something for everyone to every performance. They have engaged in some out of the box, and unexpected events over the years. As suggested by the name, this band will play any event from parties deep in the mountains, to surprise pop up events at the airport, to bumpin’ music festivals and venue shows, to assemblies for an entire school, to parade marches downtown - and everything in between.

This year’s PRISM Concert will feature the Guerilla Fanfare Brass Band and their collaboration with the CMU Wind Symphony. Together they will world premiere “Collisions” by composer in residence, Zach Brake. Collisions is a first-of-its-kind piece, joining the artistry of traditional symphonic band texture with contemporary brass band tonality, harmony, and style.

The place for art in western Colorado

As the major center for arts and culture between Denver and Salt Lake City, CMU Performing Arts in the Moss Performing Arts Center provides dance and theatre students with the tools they needed to let their creativity shine. Theatre and dance performances include:


  • The brand new Mesa Lab performances, dedicated to original work and CMU’s foray into the cutting edge of contemporary theatre making. CMU students work alongside guest artist directors, designers and playwrights to create work never seen before. Mesa Lab productions are for the adventurous-spirited seeking new insight into the human condition.

  • Main Season dance concerts, featuring internationally-renowned guest artist work, new faculty pieces and adjudicated choreography by selected students. Dance styles range from ballet and tap, to jazz and hip hop, and all styles of modern contemporary work.

  • Student-directed dance concerts and lab theatre, allowing students the freedom and the experience of producing all aspects of a theatre or dance production.
