We have what you have been waiting for!! Another art show!

This one will be at Muse Southeast. We are exhibiting the work of Alvin Smith. This show is called “Underprivileged Oasis” the artist embarked on a journey through a series of socially charged paintings. In each installment, the oasis is represented by the neighborhood liquor store. With an honest, and sometimes ugly look at the things that tend to occur there. On display are truths that many know of, but few shine light on. These works beg the question, why have these stores become gathering places for urban communities?

We partnered with our friends from California,

Alvin Smith is an incarcerated artist in Michigan’s Department of Corrections. He was born in Laurel, Mississippi, and grew up in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Alvin has been a long time participant in the University of Michigan’s Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) and one of only fifteen American incarcerated artists to be invited to participate in the “We Bear Exhibition” in Coventry England (February 2022). His art has been published by College Inside and his works are cataloged in the Kruizenga Art Museum.

This is such an amazing @artprize experience! Check out some of the Highlights from the first week! We have world famous artist @enivo as our Artist in Residence all the way from Brazil at our Leonard Gallery. We have @sleepgoodplayhard @custom.steppers @dani_so_creative and @sarekaunique showing at our Eastern location. Make sure you make it out. We are open until 8 at both locations.

We have been having really fun classes this summer with @grandrapidspubliclibrary . We identified some great artist who have unique talent and were excited to teach. We had fiber art with @anna_charee_art polymer clay with @elizabeth_usadel of @thecolorforest and this month our friend @lostheartist_ doing a charcoal class. All materials are provided and the class is free but I suggest arriving early because the last class was full before the class even started.

Such a beautiful experience last night at “A tribute to Lyricist Lounge “ with Hip Hop Legend Talib Kweli! Last night we were educated by Hip Hop legend and Scholar Talib Kweli on the history of the lyricist lounge. We then presented him with some of our amazing talent from and connected to Grand Rapids. We were graced by Artist that are next to blow globally and Local Legends. Tablib Kweli provided feedback and affirmation to our artist and to our city. There many powerful people in the room including Bakari Kitwana who was the chief editor of The Source Magazine and brains behind ＃ RapSession ! We like to thank GRCC Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Dr Mc for making this event possible as well as DJ Rush Da Guillotine for providing the sounds. Muse is a location for diverse field trip experiences. We created an experience that went with the ELA and Art common core standards. Students visited our space for a lesson on the great migration. We partnered with Steven Reynolds from @artxchangegrandrapids
