Island Bay Day History
Island Bay Day started in 2007 as a parking lot festival behind Luke's Grill in Stevensville. It moved to the lawn at Hemmingway's Restaurant in 2008, then to the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center in Grasonville in 2009. We moved to the Kent Island American Legion field in 2010 and again in 2011 where the festival grew from a small event, to a major event that attracted over 4000 people. In 2012 Island Bay Day moved to the 4H Park in Centreville to add more parking and have more room. That year we added several national acts including L.A. Guns, Days of the New, and Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg. In 2013 we had to move under the County Fairgrounds structures at 4H Park due to bad weather, and we added a "Beer Fest" featuring over 25 beers on tap along with a local winery. In 2014 we focused more on the Beer Fest and added a second "practice" stage for bands to just jam on. As much as we liked the 4H Park as a venue - It had great parking and offered overnight camping - Attendance dropped off sharply. We were offered to use âRed Eyes Dock Barâ, bringing Island Bay Day closer to the Kent Island area and we jumped on it. Itâs a smaller venue, but we figured that people would come due to the location. The first year at Red Eyes we had Blackfoot, Jimmie Van Zant, Derek St. Holmes, Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Chesapeake Sons, The Roadhouse Clams, Fast As Lightening, Love in Vein, Sleep Thru Sunday, Jacked Up, J. Coursey Willis, and more. Attendance wasnât great due to cold weather, but we decided to give it another try the next year, our 10th Anniversary year!
We brought back Blackfoot, along with Charm City Devils, Derek St Holmes, Chesapeake Sons, Love in Vein, J. Coursey Willis, Lionâs Den, Linwood Taylor, Sleep Thru Sunday, When Worldz Collide, and the band who became our âhouse bandâ over the years....Korupt closed out the night. The weather was a bit better than the previous year, but attendance was not. After much thought and bean counting, the decision was made to call it a day on âIsland Bay Dayâ after a ten year run. We made a lot of friends along the way, some enemies, and ultimately did what we set out to do: Give exposure to our great local and regional bands along with bringing in national acts for locals to see.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time, played in a band, or just bought a ticket. Maybe if we can find a way to raise money and a proper venue weâll be back someday...It would be fun.
