Wandering Press

Wandering Press Helping writers publish and creating artistic happenings.

03/07/2024

This May 10 we will be going into our 27th year of publishing, radio, podcasting, and promoting events throughout southern Illinois. Two years ago we added a small business called Hollywood Enshrined dealing in movie and TV memorabilia and snacks, drinks and some food.
Do we make a lot of income? No. But that isn't what it's always about. First and foremost we are about service.
That is service to the community. The press itself has been a bit inactive but we can change that. Where do we need to go in the future? Do you want to help?
I can be reached by Messenger, email at [email protected], by phone (618)375-1367, by mail at P.O. Box 153, Grayville, Illinois 62844
Or beginning April 1st you can stop by Hollywood Enshrined 222 West Martin Street in Grayville on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10AM-2PM.
Anyone who would like to attend our Eclipse party on Saturday April 6th starting at 6PM let us know as it is invitation only. Food, drinks and a Connecticut Yankee.
Thanks

Just read where folk singer Randy Sparks passed away on February 11th. He was the founder of the New Christy Minstrels, a Grammy winner, later manager of Burl Ives and instrumental in the folk music revival of the 1960s.
It was the pleasure of Wandering Press to help in bringing him to Newton, Illinois about twenty years ago to do a benefit concert of Burl Ives songs. He was a very knowledgeable fellow to talk to. He also helped start the careers of both Kenny Rogers and John Denver.
Sparks was 90-years-old.

Here's a free tip from you friends at Wandering Press.
One of the questions we get asked a lot is how does one even start to write a book? Well, the potential author must know beyond doubt if the subject he or she wants to write about is book worthy.

Is there enough material without being redundant to write an entire book. Could it really be a longer article or a short story you have in mind instead of a book?

is the story original. Now, I know what you're thinking...What is original anymore. Well the same story can be told numerous ways, but if you are writing about something often covered you better find a way to make it interesting to readers in a totally new and entertaining way.

Then comes the hard part. You have to actually write the book. Publishers and agents are busy people. They might love your idea, but until you have a complete manuscript no one is going to offer you any contracts. Writing the book is your follow-through. It shows you can produce what you say you can.

Let's assume the book is finished. First thing you should know is "it is not finished". Now the real work begins. But before you try to make your work into the best possible effort it can be you have to put it away, step back and do not tinker with it, do not read it, do not look at it for at least two to three weeks. Ninety days is much better. You can then approach it with a fresh set of eyes.

So, come up with an idea. Make sure that idea is viable and not been overdone. Write the book. (Most important step). Then put it aside awhile. All of this are the first things one does if they want to write a book.

We will have more tips in the future.

We are in the midst of modifying some of our sponsorship requirements which in the long run will benefit both us and our sponsors. More on Monday. Have a good weekend!

We're still trying to conduct business as usual, but it's hard when everyone is so preoccupied and discontinuing services. No idea when it will be safe to congregate. Give us a few days to figure out how to proceed with Depot Days planning.

Just wanted to take an opportunity to wish all of you a very Happy New Year. It's a miracle in itself this little press that could is going into our 23rd year, with 10 years of podcasts and 9 years of Depot concerts. Let's keep it going... As is our custom during the holidays we do little or no fundraising. There are so many worthy charities that count on the end of the year as the best giving times. We just back off and let everyone donate to the charity of their choice. However, with a new year comes new commitments. We plan to publish at least two books in 2020 as well as a Wanderer Annual. Regular broadcasts of Wandermag On-Air resume in February and we want to host a two day Depot Days festival on Grayville's riverfront in June with proceeds benefiting the GCCA (Grayville Community Arts Association). We can't go it alone. I'll be posting info as we progress on how you can help as an individual, a couple or a business. Again, thank you for making Southeastern Illinois a terrific place to work and grow.

We need some hometown songs. Budding songwriters here's your chance. The song has to be about your town or a famous person from there. Must be at least four verses ans rhyme. We're sticklers about that. Be willing to sing it on the radio. We'll provide two free dinners at one of the restaurants in our coverage area. That's your assignment. If you choose to accept it.
