A Brief Tale of Unexpected Happiness

In early 2022, Zach moved from Washington State to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to pursue a medical career in the Army. Having moved away from friends and family, he sought to make new connections, both platonic and romantic. Being an awkward duck, he turned to online help for the latter. This is when he met Megan.

Megan had moved to North Carolina seven years prior, also chasing a career change. She left her home in New Mexico and the University of New Mexico to take a managerial position at the University of North Carolina. Her family still resided in New Mexico, paralleling Zach's story of seeking intimate connections in a new place.

Their first date went well (at least if you ask Zach), and they spent most of the following weekend together. They enjoyed good food, a movie, museums, and quickly fell into ease with each other. The second weekend saw them hiking 12 miles at Hanging Rock—a significant outing for them.

The following years have extended that first weekend. Zach and Megan continue to learn more about each other and grow closer. They still enjoy meals at new restaurants (most recently Alexander's Mediterranean), visit museums (most recently the Atomic Museum in Albuquerque), and while they no longer frequent cinemas, they've almost finished watching 'House MD' and would love suggestions for their next series.

By the end of 2023, they were ready to tie the knot. (Tip: don't discuss engagement ring plans over speaker phone—you might spoil the surprise.) During Holiday Leave that year, while visiting family and friends in New Mexico, Zach took Megan on a two-mile hike up the La Luz trail, mirroring an early date. After finding the right spot, he got down on one knee. Thankfully, Megan understood his tearful babbling and answered a quiet 'Yes.'

Now in 2024, through wedding planning and career challenges, they are happier than ever. They finally tied the knot on 7/5/24.
