It's almost that time again.
I'll keep this important story short and to the point.

It was December 31st, 2010 - New Year's Eve.
I was out with friends and my ride was drinking too much. I offered to take the keys (since I don't drink) but he refused. So, I decided to walk home instead of riding with them to the "next club".

It had snowed and the ground was white. It was late and the sky was black. I was walking, using the flashlight app on my phone as a reflector/light so people would see me walking.

Then a truck came along. It was on the opposite side of the road. They had the high beams on and their muffler was loud. The lights hitting the white snow was causing a glare. Because of the loud muffler and the bright lights, I didn't hear or see the signs that a car was approaching me on MY SIDE of the street.

It should not have mattered that a car was coming, I was not walking in the road. I was up on the snow-covered grass. But, it did matter! It mattered because the driver was drunk.

He struck me with the car and I went flying through the air.

He got probation and alcohol screening for several years, plus he has to live the rest of his life knowing what he did to me.
I got permanent injuries and pain for the rest of my life.

PLEASE DON"T DRINK AND DRIVE

When we cannot support local stores, especially ones with high overhead, they will ultimately fail and close. :(

Where franchises have it harder is lies in the fact that they cannot (because of policies) alter their product and service options in a way that a small private business can.

We have had to be very flexible about what we are offering, when we are able to offer it, and just plain constantly being creative with our scheduling in order to remain stable year-round.

I know it knocks our customers around a little bit. We're open, we're not open. We have something baked fresh, we have nothing baked.... but at least we're keeping our business open.
