***Thinking About a Backyard Wedding? Read This First!****
Here are a few tips that I have learned from coordinating a few backyard weddings. Sometimes couples assume that a backyard wedding is a more affordable option, and in some cases, it can be (depending on your guest list). But there are a lot of hidden logistics that can sneak up on you!!
Top 6 Areas to Consider When Hosting a Backyard or Private Property Wedding
1. Lighting is Everything
Your backyard might be gorgeous in the daytime, but once the sun sets, it can quickly turn into a dark, unsafe space. Hang string lights, use LED uplighting, place lanterns along pathways, and set out candles for a warm, romantic glow that also helps guests see where they’re going.
2. Keep Guests Comfortable (No One Likes Sweating or Freezing!)
If your wedding is in the summer, don’t let guests melt—rent fans, misting stations, or shade structures to keep everyone cool. If it’s a fall wedding, cozy up the space with fire pits, space heaters, or even warm throw blankets to encourage guests to stay and enjoy the night.
3. Parking & Guest Flow—Don’t Get Stuck in a Traffic Jam
One thing couples don’t always think about? Parking. Most homes and private venues don’t have the space for 50+ cars, so here’s how to avoid chaos:
•Rent a shuttle from a nearby parking lot
•Hire a valet service or designate a friend to keep things smoother
•Clearly mark guest parking areas to prevent anyone from getting blocked in (or blocking vendors!)
4. Restrooms—Trust Me, You’ll Need More
If you have more than 20-30 guests, your home’s plumbing isn’t going to cut it. Renting a luxury restroom trailer is an easy way to keep guests comfortable and prevent long lines.
5. Backup Plan for Weather—Because Mother Nature is Unpredictable
Even if the forecast looks perfect, always have a Plan B. Rent a tent with flooring in case of rain, and make sure it’s big enough to cover both your ceremony and reception if needed.
6. Check Your City’s Event Calendar
Nothing is worse than finding out your wedding day coincides with a parade, festival, or road closure that creates a traffic nightmare for your guests (or delays vendor arrivals!). Check your city’s event calendar in advance so you don’t end up competing with unexpected crowds and detours.
BONUS TIP: Be Mindful of Noise Ordinances
The last thing you want is for the police to show up at your wedding because of a noise complaint. Check your city’s noise ordinances and position your band or DJ strategically so that the sound carries effectively instead of getting lost in the open air.
