* Public Service Announcement *

Tonight, a couple traveling north on Trade Street made the decision to drive down CSX Transportation’s main track behind Historic Greer Depot rather than wade through a traffic jam on Trade Street… and subsequently became stuck on the track just out of view of our security camera. While someone at La Bouteille-Greer, SC did promptly call the Greer Police Department, that still took 10 minutes before an officer was on scene. In that time, a train could have come and the occupants of this car could have been killed.

If you ever witness an event of this kind or become stuck on a railroad track for any reason, IMMEDIATELY go the crossbuck or active warning device at the rail-highway grade crossing and call the toll free number posted on the blue ENS sign located on the crossbuck or signal. This will allow the railroad to have its dispatcher contact the train in real time and get them stopped BEFORE an avoidable impact occurs. Then… call 911. But at least the train will have been stopped FIRST.

Lucky for these folks, no one was injured and the Greer Police Department helped them get towed off the track without further incident. Don’t take the chance… call the number posted at the crossing first… every time.
