Dahlia tubers are all planted but I couldn't resist buying a few cuttings.
Who can relate? Just had to create a poem for this predicament!
Ode to the Dahlia Enthusiast
In the garden’s gentle glow, A dahlia addict’s treasures grow. Like baseball cards in youthful hands, She collects her blooms, in vibrant strands.
By variety, she hunts her prize, Pompons, cactus, catch her eyes. In each type, a joy to find, Her dahlia love, perfectly defined.
By color, her collection’s framed, From ruby reds to sunsets named. A rainbow blooms beneath the sky, Her palette broad, her spirits high.
Her tubers grow beneath the earth, But cuttings add to her collection’s worth. In every petal, in every shade, A dahlia world that she has made

I see growth throughout the family flower plot. The area where you can see it very clearly is where Uncle Sam and Grayson planted. This weekend we added dahlias to the garden.

Did you know? The dahlia is Mexico's national flower, declared in 1963 for its cultural significance and native roots.

The Aztecs, who called it "Acocoxochitl," used dahlias for medicine, food, and ceremonies, symbolizing strength.

In the Victorian language of flowers, dahlias meant elegance, dignity, and commitment.

Bonus fact: Dahlia tubers are edible! They taste like a mix of potato and artichoke.

Over the weekend we had a family get together. We took a picture under our champion sugar maple tree. I think it will forever be one of my favorite pictures and memories.

Earlier this month, we received the news that we were not selected for a vendor spot at the East Lansing Farmers Market for the 2024 season. While we had the pleasure of participating over the past two years, we understand spots are not guaranteed from season to season.

We are deeply disappointed by this decision and will miss the vibrant East Lansing community, especially those who have shown us unwavering support. We have requested to be considered if an opening becomes available on any given Sunday for the 2024 season, and we remain hopeful for future opportunities.

In the meantime, we warmly invite you to visit us at Henny Pen Acres. Your continued support means the world to us, and we look forward to sharing our passion for what we do with you.

Before COVID hit, I was a weekly road warrior for work. Every new city or state I visited, I snagged postcards to send to family and friends, packed with quirky facts about the locale. With 3-4 flights a week, I had ample time to scribble away on 30-50 postcards sometimes more. That has been much more difficult with creating a flower farm and available time I have. Every now and then I will sit down and send out postcards. I know it is missed and will continue to send snail mail from time to time even when postage continues to increase. Who doesn’t love to get mail that isn’t bills, credit card applications or advertisements? So, I decided to start Fun Fact Friday all about Flowers. It may be as successful, or should we say unsuccessful as “Sheldon Copper Presents Fun with Flags” where only his friends called with comments or questions. Let’s see how it blossoms.

This year we started late but looking forward to the flowers this summer. We have over 2000 dahlia tubers with most being in clumps still. Shortly we will have some at Agricole and at Livingston farmers market May 4th.

Yesterday there were barely any tulips with color. Overnight we had enough to put together 6 bouquets for Agricole Farm Stop. We also brought potted tulips.

The spring flowers are starting to show their colors. Looking forward to their arrival. In February, Adam caught two stray cats and caring for them. They are friendly now but were wary of anyone and our other pets.

If you ever wonder why dahlias are a tad more expensive. Keep in mind they are very labor intensive. It has been two days of digging, cleaning and cutting the dahlias. We haven’t made a dent in splitting all the tubers. Typically, I reduce the clump to smaller clumps and clean them up. In the spring we will split them more down to individual tubers. It’s going to take some time to complete this task.
