For Women Veterans Recognition Day, we're honoring Dr. Olivia Ho**er who became the first African American woman to ever enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard. To honor this trailblazer, who passed away at the age of 103 in 2018, the Coast Guard named a building on Staten Island in her honor. At the ceremony, Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Paul Zukunft unveiled a plaque, stating: “Dr. Olivia Ho**er was among those who would fight the battle to open the military to all women... [she] is an inspiration and a hero to every member of the Coast Guard and our nation.”

Dr. Ho**er was born in 1915 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was six years old when her family’s home was destroyed in the infamous Tulsa race riots of 1921; she remembers being woken in the middle of the night by the sound of military machine gun fire hitting her house. She grew up to be a passionate advocate for civil rights. At first, she hadn't considered a career in the military, but after her sorority at Ohio State University campaigned for integration in the military, she decided to enlist: "I thought well, we campaigned for it. We helped to build this nation, but we didn’t get paid. We ought to be a part of everything.”

She was granted admission into the Coast Guard in 1945 as a SPAR (Semper Paratus - Always Ready), the designation used for women service personnel in the Coast Guard during World War II. She served until the SPAR program was disbanded in 1946, eventually becoming a Petty Officer, 2nd Class, and winning multiple awards for her service. She used her GI Bill benefits to earn masters and doctorate degrees in psychology, and taught at Fordham University for many years until she retired at the age of 87.

When she learned of the decision to rename the galley at the Coast Guard's base on Staten Island in her honor for her 100th birthday -- a building selected because it is one of the base's most popular -- Dr. Ho**er said, “I was astonished. I would never have expected anything like that to happen.” At the ceremony in 2015, Rear Admiral Linda Fagan also praised the lasting influence of this groundbreaking pioneer, stating: "I've never met anyone like her. She remains open and unafraid of what life will bring. She draws people in with grace and sincerity."

BREAKING: A federal court claps back against the State of Florida, permanently blocking the first state law in the country restricting access to healthcare for transgender adults

This is a FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND victory — and a powerful reminder that the tide is turning on anti-LGBTQ+ attacks.

Our HRC legal team worked with our incredible coalition partners GLAD, NCLR, and Southern Legal Counsel to fight back and bring this case to ensure trans adolescents and adults can access the care they need. https://www.hrc.org/press-releases/federal-court-blocks-first-state-law-restricting-health-care-for-transgender-adults-state-of-florida-loses-federal-challenge-as-court-blocks-law-targeting-adults-and-adolescents

Swalwell continued questioning Garland and eventually concluded with a speech accusing of House Republicans of being in a “cult.”

“My colleagues, none of this today that you are bringing makes sense. Your inconsistencies, your hypocrisy, your sycophancy – unless you are in a cult. And guys, I’m starting to think you’re in a cult. That is your right, but it’s not your responsibility. I promise you, that’s not what your constituents would want,” Swalwell said, adding:

So if you believe in state’s rights, except when a jury in that state convicts your nominee for president, you might be in a cult. If you claim you back the blue but want to defund the police, when the police go to your nominee’s house to retrieve national security secrets, you might be in a cult. If you’re supporting a guy whose felony convictions prevent him from getting a security clearance, you might be in a cult. And if the guy you’re supporting for president has felony convictions that prevent him from going to Argentina, Australia…

“Mr. Chairman, I move the gentleman’s words be taken down,” interjected a Republican member as Swalwell continued.

“Cambodia, Canada, China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia,” Swalwell continued as the member protested again, “Chairman. My, my my motion takes precedent.”

“Iran, Ireland and Israel, the gentleman China. Macao. Malaysia. Mexico. Morocco,” continued Swalwell as Jordan insisted he was out of time.

“Gentleman is out of order!” demanded Jordan banging the gavel, “Your time has expired.”

“New Zealand, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, UK,” concluded Swalwell as Jordan finally got him to stop talking.

Trump, the presumptive 2024 GOP nominee for president, has in recent months spoken out in support of Israel amid the conflict and lambasted his Democratic rivals for, in his view, not being supportive enough. Comments from earlier this month in which he urged Israeli forces to "finish the problem" were met with scrutiny by many, who accused him of supporting further violence against Palestinians. IN OTHER WORDS, TRUMP IS GIVING HIS BLESSING TO ISRAEL TO MURDER THE PALESTINE PEOPLES AND TO HURRY UP IN THE PROCESS. Is THIS the type of person YOU want to call your Leader? Cold-hearted narcissist who wants to be an American Dictator who has FULL RULE OVER YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE...HELLO KING TRUMP. ...most likely he pictures himself as that with a crown full of gold...just like his golden toilet....THINK PEOPLE, PLEASE , FOR OUR FREEDOM, BE WHAT IT MAY, IS MORE THAN MOST COUNTRUES OFFER IN OUR LITTLE WORLD. He is not the first Cristian Nationalist to try to turn our country into an autocratic country.
