The Old Oaks Farm's Central Hall is a breathtaking place for entertaining!

This stunning setup was for a rehearsal dinner held this past summer. While our formal Dining Room accommodates a long table, the mansion's Central Hall can seat even more guests! Bridal showers, rehearsal dinners, baby showers, dinner parties, and more are right at home in this stunning setting.

“The heart raves” at the sight of true love.

So wrote our nation’s first Poet Laureate Robert Penn Warren when he famously penned the poem “True Love.” Warren’s naive and young attraction to Miss Ruth Northington, and his memories of the Old Oaks Mansion are immortalized in his brilliant poem.

The Old Oaks mansion is full of secrets and stories.

As October is approaching, we’re going to share a few of the spooky secrets of Old Oaks! These figures emblazoned into the mansion’s cellar staircase look a bit scary at first, but the symbol is actually a burned-in double-A.

For awhile, the house was renamed under the Alison family that owned the farm during the 20th century, then called “Alison Acres.” The Alisons had a business in Texas, and as Texans do, they owned cattle that they hot branded, hence the branded staircase. The next family of owners returned the mansion’s name to its original moniker of “Old Oaks.”

If you’d like a tour of Old Oaks, let us know! We would love to accommodate groups of friends, and/or family, for special events and occasions, and tell the mansion’s illustrious stories!

Golden hour hits a little different on Old Oaks Mansion’s balcony.

The “sleeping porch,” faces the beautiful western sunset. Nearly every evening, a show of brilliant colors washes over the sky, set against gold tipped trees and crop lands.

The design of Old Oaks is based on architectural pattern books from the era of the Greek Revival style.

In the 19th century, the mansion’s commissioner Mr. Dorrel Smith may have used the patterns books of architect Minard Lafever to plan his home. In the Minard pattern books, the same “egg and dart” door surround can be seen in the Old Oaks mansion’s entry door. Likewise, the parlor pocket doors emulate a design seen in the same edition of Minard’s work.

The United States first poet laureate Robert Penn Warren immortalized Old Oaks mansion when he wrote the home into the poem “True Love.”

The Greek-Revival mansion remains today as a place where guests can visualize a young Warren pining for the attention of the beautiful Ruth Northington.

It's hot, but we're cool - and there's a few secrets as to why!

This beautiful old house stays cool with very LITTLE help from modern air-conditioning. 150 years ago, the Old Oaks mansion was designed with expert skill! The entire house radiates around a central hallway which cuts through the whole house on all three floors. In the oppressive heat of the summertime (like today!) the front and rear doors could be left open to create a breeze through the entire mansion.

All of the mansion's rooms connect to this hallway, so that every room could benefit from the breeze - known as "passive cooling."

What's very unique about the design of the mansion is that every room in the house has a transom (a small window that can be opened) above the door. This allows for you to maintain privacy behind closed doors, but also the benefit of keeping the air moving through the mansion's many rooms.

That's not all, the walls of the building are over four bricks thick at the bottom, which helps to insulate and cool the interior. Our ceilings are also over 14' tall, and since heat rises, that leaves the coolest air at floor level.

The Old Oaks mansion has a colorful history!

The 13,000 square foot Greek-Revival mansion was commissioned by Dorell Burnley Smith sometime after the year 1872 near Hadensville, Kentucky. In 1871, his entire property - including his house, to***co warehouses, and barns - were all burned by arson. Adding additional financial strain, Dorell's insurance company denied the arson claim, which made headlines across the region.

Remarkably, Dorell was able to not only rebuild his losses from several profitable years of to***co harvests, but he spent the 1870s constructing one of the largest to***co warehouse empires in Southern, Kentucky and the stately "Old Oaks" mansion that remains today.
