Poetry Safari 2023 was only possible by the incedible art of our poets! Dive into "Giraffe" by Stephanie Mirocha:

I just want you to know today I am a giraffe!
See, I hardly even had to try my eyes are riding up so high it makes me laugh
to see my body far below.
Up here are leafy, secret places
I could never reach before!
It's fun to have my neck grow long
though stretching down somehow feels wrong; with legs as high up as the door
I'll find my favorite outdoor spaces.
I know that now it's time to go
and do the things a child does. Still, so you know, I will rise with tree top places for my prize at any moment just because
I love this world both high and low!

A poet so nice we included her twice! Read Laura Purdie Salas's second poem in Poetry Safari 2023, "Hatching":

Tap! Crack!
Oval eggs.
Yellow fluff.
Orange legs.
Bright eyes.
Tiny cheeks.
Peck! Peck!
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
Pointy beaks.
Look who hatched-
baby chicks!

Poetry Safari 2023 was a hit! However, it wouldn't have been possible without our amazing Minnesota poets! Check out "Happy Silly Animals" by the effervescent Molly Ovenden:

To see: happy hippos dancing, Delighted dolphins prancing, Posh poodles sideways glancing, Treasured turkeys tip-tap-toe With fancy feet, it's so sweet,
I feel happy!
When rhinos whistle like canaries,
When fishes leap like zebras, When elephants hope like frogs, When kittens soar like eagles, When mosquitoes bark like dogs,
I feel so happy because it's so silly!
To see: chicken feet stomping like horses, Butterflies swimming like octopus, Snails gathering nuts like squirrels, Polar bears chasing minnows like sharks, I feel happy and oh, so giddy!
When mice roar like lions, When ponies dig like moles,
When ferrets climb trees like monkeys, When sheep call out like roosters, When goats moo like cows,
I feel happy, it's so...ridiculous! And I feel so very happy to see
All of these silly animals around me!

Did you know Laura Purdie Salas had TWO poems in Poetry Safari 2023? Here's her first poem,

"Green Darner, the Lake Dancer":

Dazzling emeralds flashing and falling,

Resting on sunshine, never quite stalling.

Acrobatic shimmering flight.

Glimmering cellophane wings catching light.

Over the lake, it goes hop-skipping by.

Now it opens its mouth to swallow a

We had incredible artists for Poetry Safari 2023 and Lauren is one of them! Enjoy "A Paddling of Ducks" by the incredible Brainerd Lakes-based poet Lauren Nickisch

A paddling of ducks
Streams along the sunny shore Obediently following one by one
Mother leads the way
Tiny bills preen tiny breasts
Pedaling through ripples and waves
Feathered heads look every direction
Learning the ways of nature
Without Mother's notice
Parade stops forward progress
Little ducks bob
Round and round Mother glances back
"Quack Quack Quack"
She commands
No response from her brood
"Quack! Quack! Quack!" She repeats
Little bills open in reply
"But! But! But!"
But! Some weeds! But! Some bugs!
But! Some fish!
"Quack! Quack! Quack!"
Butt! Butt! Butt!
Little bottoms up
Little heads below, appetites whetted Mother instructs, young ones don't listen Basic needs triumph
It's time to eat!

Don't miss Sharon Sonderlund's exquisite poem, "Nature's Dance"!

Elephants trumpet.

Woodpeckers drum.

Millipedes march

And cicadas hum.

Barracuda circle.

Caterpillars creep.

Eagles glide across the sky.

Conch shells drag their feet.

Peacocks fan dance.

Pink flamingoes pose.

Fireflies flash dance.

Snakes shed their clothes.

Worms and lizards belly crawl.

Whales roam the seas,

but none of them can read

or write poetry like me!

With Poetry Safari 2023 wrapped, we're sharing the poems you hunted for! Here's "Spring Insect Rescue" by the incredible Duluth-based writer, Sarah Royer-Stoll.

I watched the jewel-like June bug
As he spun on his shiny back
Next to my bright blue petunias
Inside their bright turquoise flower pot
His legs danced like little hairs
To tickle the back of my nervous hand
As I gently turned him right-side-up
He stood there, a vibrant coffee brown
Then strolled away like only a June bug can
Safely and slowly, behind my orange daisies
Next to the gnome-shaped watering can

For Poetry Safari 2023, we asked Minnesota poems to submit their finest poems on animals & their environments.

The results were amazing.

Read "Call of the Loons" by Sue Ready:

A nighttime serenade
haunting
mysterious
captivating
resonates through summer nights.

Mournful calls
lull me to sleep
until a new day breaks.

Poetry Safari 2023 might be over, but poetry is year round! Read Kelly Lydick & her son Phineas's poem, "Cardinal":

Cardinal in your cactus tree,
Tell us what is it you see?
Gecko, snake, hummingbird?
Chipmunk, coyote, roadrunner?
Desert blooms in white flowers
Looking for some more water?
Perching high, the cactus spy,
Sees the beauty from its tree.

Now that the hunt is complete, we're sharing the poems for Poetry Safari 2023! Both in the wild & on paper, here's John Thornberg's "Red Dragonfly":

A red dragonfly
revs on the runway,
my lake dock turned
into a remote airfield.
Ready for takeoff,
his head twitching,
he scans the hazy sky
for unwary fly-bys,
nature’s equivalent
to the Red Baron
in his saucy biplane.
But early fall is here,
the airfield already
scheduled to close,
the hunt soon over.
No scrambles when
the runway snows in.
Not even a dragonfly
dressed in fiery red
can outrun the pale
horsemen of winter.
