Gentlemen's Leather & Emporium

Gentlemen's Leather & Emporium A place for affordable leather goods for LARPs, Steampunk, and Cosplay. You are probably wondering why it's called Ends & Odds, instead of Odds & Ends.

Well, I had a little contest on another page to see who can come up with a name for my store. After several weeks, one name stood out. The person who created thought it was cleaver to swap the two words around. Yes, some might think is not cleaver but more dyslexic, but I like it.

I'm now branching into woodworking which offers an exciting opportunity for my brand and tap into a new realm of creativity and craftsmanship. Incorporating woodworking into my skill set not only expands my repertoire but also enhances the brand's authenticity and uniqueness. By mastering (mostly from trial and error lol) this trade skill, I can create custom-made pieces that resonate with my audience and clients, adding a personalized touch to your offerings.

Materials:
8 oz Veg tan leather
4 oz strap for the upper arm piece
Work Time: 20 hours

This has to be the 4th, maybe 5th time I "upgraded" this prop. IYKYK. This build I got to use my xTool P2 CO2 Laser cutter. The symbols you see are actually engraved, burned rather, into the leather. Having a laser cutter REALLY makes things super easy in the mass producing department. Some say that using a laser cutter takes the mystery and skill away from the task. I disagree. It enhances it and when you don't have much time, this makes up for that time missed. You will see more items in the future that the laser cutter has been incorporated.

Gorget of Ravenhurst

Materials:
7 oz Veg tan leather
Work time: 9 hours

Forcing leather to do what you want can be difficult, especially with this build. The collar had a steep curve to bend which made the rivet holes to not align right, but after fighting with it, the gorget was finally made. Would make again. :)

Spellweaver's Belt

Materials:
9 oz leather for girdle or kidney belt
6 oz veg tan leather 2" belt blank
2 oz Pig Suede for the backing for comfort
2 oz pre-dyed leather strap for the inside keeper
Work Time: 15 hours

This belt idea was a prototype that's been floating in my mind, forever, on how I could make large belts that didn't collapse on itself. Don't you hate when your belt does that cross in the front creating that "V" wedge, well I thought to myself...how could I stop that? So I decided to put in an inner keeper where the belt slides underneath to keep that straight formation. As you in the photo is keeps things sleek and after wearing it for a weekend, it never lost it's form. I think I will add this to future large kidney belts.

My first articulated suit of armor. All pieces move according to the body's movements with ease. This was a fun build up and I cannot wait to make another set.

Helmet of the Arcanum Visage.

What a magnificent piece. This was one of many reasons why I got into leather working, to make something like this. I've been following Prince Armory for years now and I always coveted his helms. With his patterns that he sells, I'll be able to create spectacular helmets like him, since I have a foundation to work on. This was definitely was an advanced build and I did make a few mistakes along the way, but it's all a part of the journey... all in all I loved how this came out perfect in my eyes.

Materials:
9 oz Veg tan leather - Core Helm
8 oz Veg tan leather - Crest and Visor
6 oz Veg tan leather - Helmet tail
29” Natural Black Horse tail hair

Upgraded my workshop with proper photography lighting, finally. It’s been on my long list of things to upgrade for the workshop and now I can cross it off my list. Since I have the proper lighting, I’m super excited to take pictures of all of the projects from the past 8 weeks. So I’ll do that tomorrow and begin the process of editing and then post. Should have that ALL done by Monday-ish.

Now that my tome is finished. I can now return to this project, which is almost becoming the bane of my existence. The visor is the trickiest part of this build but i will prevail.

This was my first attempt at book binding and I have to say I really learned a lot with this project. Now, this book is not done in the traditional manner with the front and back covers, but the block inside was done traditionally. WIP photos will shortly follow.

This project is massive. So much texturing and my left elbow is telling me to stop. So im going to take a mini break on this cause I need to decide if I want to immersion dye this where I dunk these parts into a vat of dye for a consistent coat but that uses a lot of dye or do my normal method of using sponges and doppers. So now I want to move on and explore a new trade…Book Binding.

I want to show at least one thing I’m working on. This is going to be a gorget, a piece of armor that protects the neck area. It’s going to require a skill set that I’m not really good at , which is skiving, where you shave off bits of leather to reduce the thickness. So this will be fun.

Happy 2024, everyone! I know I'm a bit late on this, but I have been very very busy with life. These past few weeks I've been on some big things and completing commission orders. I really want to post what I'm working on, but I don't to spoil the surprise.

I managed to make these pretties over the holidays. I know you Dice Goblins will appreciate them. Enjoy. I'll post more as they develop. In the meantime... Stay classy!

After months and months of researching and decision making, I finally settled on a laser cutter that I wanted. Behold the xTool P2 laser cutter and riser. This thing is a beast and I’m not taking about what it can and will do… I’m taking about the weight. I needed help from my Father to lift this on the riser in the Production room. It weighs a whopping 129 pounds. My back is killing, but worth it.

Stay tuned for more things to come with this thing.

Wanted to share a pro-tip with everyone. When playing with silicone, it can get very very messy and you can easily waste material if not careful. This stuff is not cheap when you buy it by the gallon. The smaller bottles (2lbs.) are easy to manage and require no additional tools say for a stirrer, but for the bucket… get these large plastic syringes that are meant for feeding animals. It makes life so much easier. Downside to it is that it will take some arm strength to get the solution to go in. Silicone is thick. Thicker than a McDonald’s milkshake.

Hope this helps. It did for me.

My workshop is actually looking like a workshop. I finally made shelves for my leather tools so they are not all over my other workbenches. I’m super proud how these turned out. Just need to hide the stainless steel brackets cause it does take away from the pallet wall. What do you think of it?

10/28/2023

Ok, it’s been quite a bit of time since I last posted something. A lot has happened these past 6 months. The tldr version is, my primary job went through a layoff spree during the summer, my contract with this company got extended 3 times since then, and now it comes to a close at the end of November. But not to worry though, I found a permanent position that starts in Dec. So during all that time I haven’t been creating anything except small one shot items for friends and family. Now that my financial status has been situated, I can finally get back to making things and show them off to you all. So til then, stay classy.

At long last I have finally finished my pallet wall in my workshop. A project that should have taken me maybe 2 weekends, but it took at least a month to complete due to finishing commissions and my primary job. Now to to finish the side walls and then the floor, but that will be done when the weather is not 1000 degrees. I’ll post the WIP photos and what it takes to make one of these.

Now I need to get back to my commissions.

It’s happening, it’s finally happening. I’m going to start on my pallet wall in my workshop, now that I have some breathing room. After researching of finding out how much it would cost, a good friend said to me, “why don’t you find pallets, they are free…” Needless to say I was in. So now I have to cut, plane, sand, and then stain some of these planks that I managed to separate with a very handy tool. The way I was doing it was very tiresome. So here is my canvas and my series of paint brushes. Wish me luck.

This was a beast of a project, but worth it. I had a small window between commissions to finally construct this enclosure box for my CNC Router Machine and eventually a Laser Cutter. I can get a diode laser module for this machine so the orange acrylic will do nicely to help protect the eyes. Now, I just need to plaster my logo all over it and call it a day.

03/29/2023

Time to get REALLY classy here. After months and months of research from Google to YouTube, I finally have a CNC router machine. Another toy in my already large toy box. I have so many things lined up for this, but first I need to make an enclosure box to contain all the dust and debris and make a few upgrades like getting a bigger router spindle drill to replace the 10,000/rpm spindle that comes with. For harder woods, like walnut or cherry, 17,000/rpm is needed. Then after that, get the laser diode attachment. Once I have that, oh man, watch out.

It's not too often where I get to make something that is not for a Larp or Cosplay. It's kinda refreshing. I do love how the white stitching on the sides make the belt pop and the texture stamping as well. This belt is so good, I'm half tempted to make myself a belt for myself. Been wearing the same belt for at least 10+ years now, so I think it's time.

Did an overhaul in my workshop/garage these past few days. Broke down old boxes from the big move into the new house almost 3 years ago. Went through my 50 gal tote with all of my Larp gear that I collected over the years and put that into another box to then send to another home cause I don’t need it or want anymore. After all of that fun stuff, I finally constructed another workbench with help from my father. This makes workbench #3. One more to go to fill that side of the workshop and that side will be just for leather working and large machinery like a soon to be CNC machine.

It’s getting there my classy people.

Time to level up the dice game. So far I have made a clear set, a split pour set, and a transparency film insert set. Now it’s time to play with mica powders. These came in today and wow… so many colors to try and play with. The only thing I have to say about these powders… it’s incredibly fine and when it’s gets on your skin… yeah it doesn’t come off. It’s worse than glitter.

‘The Emerald Queen’: A Poem by Evan Mantyk

Have you heard the old tale of the Emerald Queen?
‘Twas a long time ago when folks would demean
We humans as animals—nothing else more!—
Evolved from bacteria found on the floor.
They forgot the Creator had made us like him,
That we’re here for a purpose and not on a whim.
Not seeing the truth they were consequently
Destroying themselves quite unchivalrously.

But those who would chance to be walking near here,
By the woods over yonder, would subtly hear
A voice like a brook flowing softly on rocks
That sang of a crystalline key that unlocks
Old mysteries’ truths they forgot had existed.
The voice called them on and its pulling persisted.
It drew them on further through winding old trails
Where waterfalls gush and ruins tell tales,
To a castle where sang the Emerald Queen—
A proof in herself of a kingdom unseen.

Another set that was finished, but never made it to the announcement post. It's hard to get the right angle so you can see inside the crested dice.

Later, I will make a post and show you all what goes into dice making. Kinda like a behind the scene thing. Until then, stay classy everyone.

03/03/2023

Well, it looks like I didn't have to wait after all. My surprised package arrived early for my client today and she absolutely LOVES it. Dice-Goblin approved. Now, there were some tears on both sides of the conversation because she was just touched at the gesture, but I got the reaction I wanted when she looked inside her dice and found her owl crest inside.

So now I can finally announce a new product that GLE will provide to the masses, especially those Dice-Goblins. BEHOLD!!!.........
I make dice now!!!! oh and Dice Vault too.

03/02/2023

So hopefully tomorrow I will be able to announce the new product that I’ve been working on and been having fun making these past few weeks. I sent a surprise package to a friend to get the “Goblin Seal of Approval,” and the best part is that she has NO idea what it is. I’m excited to see her reaction when she opens it.

Until next time. Stay classy.

02/21/2023

Ok. Just pulled my 2 experimental projects from its confinement and I’m actually happy with the results and look of them. Just have wait another day to begin the finishing phase.

02/17/2023

So I think I worked out all the kinks on this project. I’ve learned so much and can’t wait to mass produce. I have 2 more experimentations before I can officially announce to you all, a new product that I will be adding to my craft list. So stay tuned. Hopefully I can give another update in a few days.

02/09/2023

This is going to be one of those vague posts because I don't want to alert the goblins and make them go "Goblin-mode" for what I'm working on right now. It's a surprise... Right now, I have been planning and resin printing these past few weeks and what I can say is... it's not easy to get right on the first try. You have to fail multiple times before you can succeed. I got things cooking and now it's the waiting game. I'll start up my leather craft again shortly. Learning new ways of crafting does take time.
