Hawaii Island Camino (HIC), the Way of Kamehameha, Walking the Kings Trail - HIC11 and 165.8 miles total into an 18 hike, 300 mile Camino celebrating the Island of Hawaii. The 12 member, Inaugural HIC 2024 group has completed Hiking the Kona Coast and turning for Hilo as we walk from Kamehameha statue to Kamehameha statue utilizing the National Historical Trails, the King's Trail, as part of the National Park, and Hawaii State and County owned property on the designated National Historical Trails, fishing trails and shoreline access around the coast of our island. The history is amazing and the landscape if spectacular. Seven more hikes to go to complete the Hawaii Island Camino in October of 2024.

HIC hike distance averages 15 miles over rough terrain and the typical hike times are 8 to 10 hours on two Saturdays a month for 9 months. This is an advanced hiking course. Two of the HICs are overnight hikes so 18 hikes, 20 days hiking, covering 300 miles. There is no support for most hikes and hikes are one way, start to finish.

Do you want in to attempt this World Class Hike, the Hawaii Island Camino? If this is something that interest you, go to www.hawaiiislandcamino.com and sign up for more information to get details on the 2025 HIC Group that will kick off in January and the launch of the website with all HIC information for you to complete the journey on your own.

As mentioned, another HIC Camino group will start next year January, 2025, but you can also do the HIC on your own or with your own group starting in 2025 with the assistance from the website. The website is in development but will currently allow you to sign up for more information. Eventually, the website will allow you to register for the HIC, document your progress on the 18 segments, upload and see comments and pictures for each HIC segment from other hikers, and will provide you all of the information you need to successfully complete each segment through utilization of Google Map Waypoints as well as a pocket sized HIC hiking guide. Once you complete with all 18 HIC segments documenting them on the website, you will receive a certificate for completing the Hawaii Island Camino and recognition on the website for your accomplishment.

Come join your fellow Big Islanders on this World Class Hiking Adventure exploring this magical island we call home, Hawaii Island. Come be a HIC.

Aloha Hakalau and Wailea Neighborhood Watch,

We have been very inactive as of late, but want to remind you that we are here for the sole purpose of NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS. Part of that mission is twofold, Crime Prevention and Disaster Preparedness. We are all shocked as to what happened in Maui…. And that can happen to any island based especially with the extremely dry conditions and that we live in a FOREST. Susan Juettner has set up a class on Fire through the FIREWISE COMMUNITY PROGRAM. Again, Neighbors helping Neighbors. Please come out, attend, and support. You can do this in two ways:

1. Show up at the Jodo Mission and attend the class in person, January 30, 2024 from 6 to 7:30pm.
2. Join by Zoom from your home. Zoom link is pasted below.

Please RSVP if attending be it on Zoom or in person to the following: [email protected]. Thank you for doing this for our community.

Please come show your support for our community and the hard work done to bring this resource to you. We live in the best place in the world, and we love our neighbors. Neighbors helping Neighbors.

Aloha,

Chad

We Did It! We Hiked the Island! We now have a documented route, except Waipio Valley, around the island. Guess what? There is over 270.5 miles of costal trail you can walk and 102.6 miles requires on to walk on the road. Almost half of the road distance is the Hamaku’a Coast from Hilo to Waipio Valley. This is amazing. I want to thank the support from the team listed below of dedicated hikers that made this possible by having the courage and dedication to tough it out. Also a big thanks to our county officials and all the advice we were given along the way by our advisors to complete this journey. Now it is time to refine the data and get it out to people so they can enjoy this BIG ISLAND. Aloha and Happy New Year!

Chad

Conditions and Hike: We met at Spencer Beach Park, at 7am on Saturday 23 December and loaded into a support vehicle that dropped us at the starting point. We started at 7:47 am and finished the hike at 4:15 pm. The hike was 16.3 Miles, 14.2 on trail and last 2.1 on the road. It is was BEAUTIFUL as we will walk MILES of old Hawaiian Ruins, past lovely mansion homes, more ruins, and past the industrial shipping area that keeps our island alive. There are some houses near the trail end at 11.5 miles, but the coastal trail is established and labeled. It will be obvious when you must get on the road as the gulch leads to the bridge and highway. Once over the bridge you can get back on trail but eventually will run into a neighborhood that you must walk on the roads until you get to the national park where you can use the trails to take you to Spencer Beach Park. A great way to finish a yearlong adventure.

Conditions and Hike: We met at Mahukona Pier, at 6:30am on Saturday 02 December and loaded into a support vehicle that dropped us at the starting point. We started the hike at 730am and we finished at 530pm at dusk. This was a LONG Hike!, But it was so beautiful and my favoirte of the entire island. This is such BEAUTIFUL Coastal Hiking. It was long, but wow the Scenery we saw along the way to include old railroad paths, green plains cliff edge on the ocean, beaches, and the mighty Northshore elevated, costal plains. You will also pass through many historical places, Mookini Heiau and Kamehameha Birthplace, an old coastguard base, as well as walk the old railroad tracks that are a wonderful hiking path. The finish includes a great swimming hole at Mahukona Pier so bring a suit. Again, my favorite hike so far!

Recent Article on Mauna Loa...... Only place in the world you can sit on a beach and see a snow capped mountain and a volcano mountain with lava at the same time.

The magnificent glow illuminating the sky and brilliant reddish-orange lava, exploding out of Moku Aweoweo, slowly creeping down Mauna Loa. Thousands are flocking to the island to see Madame Pele in all her glory.

We have stayed at AirBnBs around the world and this is absolutely one of the nicest we have stayed at. The accommodation is beautiful - hanging on the ocean, grounds beautifully kept, suite lovely. Chad took time to explain the property and history of the island to us. Both Jennifer and Chad were friendly and very helpful. Communication with Chad was great. We hope to come back. We felt very lucky that we were able to book with Chad and Jennifer.

Chad, Jennifer, and Rose are the absolute best hosts on the planet. They are kind, warm, and truly want to help you have the best Hawaii vacation possible. The Airbnb itself is breathtaking. The property is gorgeous and the pool is fabulous. You get the feel of a fancy resort without the massive crowd of people and insane price tag. Book this and you won’t regret it!

I cannot say enough about our time at Hale Laule'a with Chad and Jennifer! From the sunrises to the moonlit nights over the ocean, the beauty of this place is beyond compare! The views of the ocean are stunning and the grounds are meticulously cared for with surprises everywhere you look. There are numerous places to relax and enjoy the beautiful setting. We loved getting to know the family dogs and the horses, but the best part was having Chad and Jennifer treat their guests like family! They were a wealth of knowledge about the history, the area, the vegetation, always giving suggestions of places to visit off the beaten path and they even took us on an early morning hike with their dogs! Oh and the hot tub and the ability to watch the sunrise from our bedroom window were added bonuses. Last but not least, the location is perfect for visiting Akaka Falls, snorkeling at Richardson Park in Hilo, and even a day trip to Volcano National Park! Can't wait to return!
