Around 1886, Ida Jane Cason came to LaGrange to attend Southern Female College. She was introduced to young Fuller Callaway by her roommate, who was also his cousin. Fuller, who was running his department store downtown, wooed Ida with notes and bananas, a very rare treat in those days, delivered by Fuller’s brother Ely. The two fell in love and eventually agreed to marry when Ida was 18 and Fuller was 20. The wedding took place 130 years ago, on April 28, 1891, in Jewell, Georgia.

The timing of the wedding was closely tied to the train schedules, as Fuller didn’t want to have to close his store for longer than absolutely necessary. He closed the store in the evening on April 27, 1891, and then took several trains to get to Jewell, where he arrived at the church at 11:15am for the service. Following the ceremony, the newlyweds caught a train to Atlanta for their wedding night, in which they saved money by staying with his brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Lula Callaway, before returning to LaGrange very early the next morning. This immense amount of planning allowed Fuller to only have to close the store for a single day. In 1928, Ida wrote of her wedding day, “Thirty-seven years later, we both still felt it was the best day’s work we ever did.” Happy anniversary Fuller and Ida!
