I harvested dozens of dahlias this morning, created bouquets with them, zinnias, celosia, basil etc, and then JC and I delivered them to some of our amazing subscribers. Not a bad way to spend a birthday!

Bells of Ireland 😍
We've been growing this beauty for three years now, still haven't mastered it, but we'll keep trying!
Pros- it's unique and adorable
- smells amazing, very light and fresh
- the spring green color coordinates with pastels and bright colors and they make a gorgeous straight bundle.
Cons- tends to get rust here (haven't figured out how to prevent it), so I need to harvest early before the stems get as long as I'd like them.
- has thorns when harvested larger, but we have been harvesting early, so it's a non-issue for us.
- sensitive to heat. A warmer than usual spring will finish them up quickly.
Are you a bells of Ireland fan like we are?

And when it does, we'll have the best garden party ever and you're all invited!

The second most common question I've been asked this week is: Can I start seeds now?
The answer here in coastal NC is yes and no! Ha!
No, you probably shouldn't start warm weather annuals like tomatoes, peppers, zinnias, dahlias etc. It's early to start them indoors, they'll get rootbound before it's warm enough to transplant them outdoors in April. And it's definitely too cold to direct sow warm weather annuals.
However, you absolutely can start cold hardy annuals now! Lettuce, beets, cilantro, peas, along with orlaya, nigella, sweet peas, and sweet William can and should be started now. If you wait until our last frost in early April, these plants won't have enough time to produce well before the heat gets to them.
The list of cold hardy plants for our area is long. If you're wondering if you can plant something now, just Google "is (blank) cold hardy in zone 8?" Be sure to check if that particular seed should be direct sown or transplanted (started indoors).
Which seeds are you excited about starting?

Another use for rosemary, homemade cleaners!
A few weeks ago I put rosemary and orange peels in a jar with white vinegar. Today I'll strain it and dilute it in a spray bottle and clean all the things! Well, maybe not ALL the things, but I'll definitely try it out!
Do you make your own cleaners? Any tips and tricks?

Which flowers are you growing this year?
It's so hard to choose just a few when they're all so beautiful!
But, when just starting a garden, it's best to narrow it down and learn to grow just a few varieties at first. You can (and will!) add more next year!
