Brian J. Skaggs�February 20, 1958 – December 30, 2024
Brian Skaggs, 66, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 30, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. After a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, the Lord called him home.
Born on February 20, 1958, in Hanford, California, Brian was the beloved son of Clara and Bill Skaggs. He enjoyed a happy and adventurous childhood alongside his younger brother, Brent. A graduate of Hanford High School, Class of 1976, Brian excelled in academics, participated in Future Farmers of America (FFA) showing cattle, and played football with passion.
Brian went on to earn both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from California State University, Fresno. He built a remarkable career as a Civil Engineer, dedicating 44 years to Summers Engineering Inc., where he served as Vice President and was highly regarded for his expertise and leadership.
A true pillar of the Hanford community, Brian gave generously of his time and talents. He served as President of the Hanford Fraternal Hall for many years and was an active Director of the Hanford Portuguese Festa Committee. His involvement with the Hanford Fraternal Hall was especially meaningful, and he took pride in maintaining its traditions. Additionally, Brian served as a volunteer firefighter with the Kit Carson Volunteer Fire Department for several years, embodying his commitment to helping others.
Brian’s love for Pismo Beach was evident in his role as a Director at Pismo Coast Village. He served as Chairman of the Environmental Health & Safety Committee, contributing to the preservation and safety of a place he cherished deeply. He also participated in various other committees during his tenure, demonstrating his dedication to the community.
A passionate Fresno State football fan, Brian was a loyal season ticket holder who enjoyed cheering on the Bulldogs.
Above all, Brian was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and son. His family was his greatest joy. He is survived by his daughter, Marissa Mattivi, her husband Anthony, and their three children, Audrey, Anthony, and Austin. He also leaves behind his brother Brent, sister-in-law Tracy, nephew Jack, and nieces Katie and Becky. Brian was preceded in death by his loving parents, Bill and Clara, whose values and love shaped the remarkable man he became.
Brian will be remembered for his kindness, intelligence, humor, and his booming, infectious laugh that brought joy to everyone around him. He had an extraordinary ability to connect with people and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His impact on his family, friends, colleagues, and community will be felt for years to come.
