Got rain? ☔️ Great! Our need it! What can you accomplish in and for the while those valuable drops are falling? Here's some tips!
Collect rainwater in bottles, watering cans or pots, which has more nitrogen that water from the faucet, and can save on tap water use.
Clean up your garage, garden shed or greenhouse, gardening tools and empty pots while you're at it.
Check the expiration dates of your soils and fertilizers. Soils that contain mycorrhizae remain viable for up to two years.
Inspect your garden. Where are puddles forming? Is the rain causing erosion? Are sheltered plants not receiving enough water?
Take your indoor plants out for a drink, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the fresh rainwater.
Plan your next garden, by preparing a map for next season, researching models online that will help you plan it properly.
After rain falls . . .
Get rid of weeds while the soil is wet, they are easier to pull and keep the roots and taproots intact.
Watch for slugs and snails, which usually hide in places that stay humid after the rain, especially lettuce.
Install stakes for beans, tomatoes, and the like, while the ground is hydrated and easier to press in.
Mix your compost to allow the water to disperse evenly, and turn in dry leaves and grass clippings.
Check your potted plants and vegetables for waterlogging.
Harvest your lettuce post-rainfall for a sweeter taste and softer texture.
