GOT JOY?
Have you ever met someone and KNOWN they were a Christian before any word about Jesus was spoken? I have. The tell-tale sign of that persons faith is usually their joy. True Christians are marked by joy. (as well as love and peace). Paul the apostle at the end of his letter to the Philippians made a strong commandment, not a suggestion when he declared, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again, rejoice!” Php. 4:4. He did say it just once. He said it twice. He did say we should rejoice sometimes, or when things are going well, or times are good. He said we need to rejoice in the Lord ALWAYS.
Joy is not to be dependent on outside circumstances, like happiness. Instead, it is an indicator of something bubbling up from within, which is an indication of inside condition. What is that condition? It is the presence of the Holy Spirit.
St. Paul describes elsewhere, what is the natural fruit of the Spirit. The first three being love, joy and peace. Cf Gal. 5:22. Fruit grows naturally. Apple trees grow apples, orange trees oranges. If you are a Christian you should be growing love, joy and peace. A song comes to mind, “Jesus on the inside, working on the outside, oh what a change in my life…” What is happening on the inside expresses what is going on outside. IF you truly have the Holy Spirit in you, your life should be marked by love joy and peace. Therefore, following Paul’s command to Rejoice always should not be that hard.
Just after this command, Paul gives us a hint on how to carry it out. “ Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” Php 4:5. Anxiety and worry is the killer of joy. My paraphrase of Paul says, “Stop with the anxiety! Don’t worry. Be happy!” Why? Because we can bring all of these things that bother us to God with prayer, petition, and most importantly, thanksgiving. My old pastor used to preach, “Whatever you can be thankful to God for, as lost its power to defeat you.”
As Christians, we know, we are on the right side of history. We know eternal life with God in heaven awaits us. We know that no matter our trials and tribulations, He who is with us is greater than he who is against us. We know that God is in charge, and that all things work together for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose. Rom. 8:28 Because everything is for our good, we can learn to be thankful for it, even if it is temporarily displeasing. God allows circumstances to mold and build us spiritually. Things bothering you? Let us thank Him for these things and trust Him. If you can do this, God will exchange your worry for peace and joy.
Everytime I go to chapel, I may enter with joys and exuberance, but more likely I also carry stress, worry and anger. I give those things to Jesus, placing them at the foot of the cross, and I leave my prayer time with a feeling of peace and lightness. At the end of Pauls’s declaration about the necessity of joy to the Philippians, he promises,
“Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Php 4:7.
Rejoice, bring your troubles to God with thanksgiving prayer and petition and what do you get? PEACE THAT PASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING.
Let Jesus take away your worries, trust Him, and you will receive peace that passes understanding and your hearts will be naturally full of joy.
May the Spirit of Christmas, which is really the Holy Spirit be with you! Love, Joy, Peace.
