Celebrate USA cave animal of the year!

The Ceuthophilus cave cricket is the USA cave animal of the year for 2023! This captivating cave cricket doesn’t have wings or ears, instead, they can feel vibrations through the hair in their legs and antennae.

Cave crickets are an important part of the cave ecosystem. They exit caves at night to look for food, and then they come into caves where they leave sources of nutrients in the form of guano, exoskeleton sheds and eggs.

Habitat destruction is the primary threat to this species. We can help protect cave crickets by maintaining natural vegetation around cave entrances.

Celebrate cave history!

Caves are sheltered environments that are great for preserving evidence of past human activities such as paintings, tools and clothing. Melrose Caverns has used by Native Americans, European colonists and Union soldiers for a variety of purposes. Remnants of all three have been found in in and around the caverns. Many cultures have used caves as a gathering place for worship, art and shelter.

Preservation Spotlight: As we focus on New Market in our lead up to the 160th anniversary, today we highlight 58 acres preserved on the battlefield in 2005. Located along the George R. Collins Parkway, the land is known for Imboden's Spring, because of a spring on the property used by Confederate Gen. John Imboden's cavalry between 1863 and 1864. During the Battle of New Market, the land was the scene of heavy fighting as the battle moved north toward the Bushong Farm. Today, the site is open to the public with parking, trails, and interpretive markers.
