This technique will instantly up your cosplay game and make your work cleaner.
I love shanked buttons, they are the buttons with the loops in the back and there are lots of designs in cosplay and in the fashion world that use them. But if they are not holding two pieces of fabric together, taking up the space that the loop sits in between the fabric and the button head, it can look messy and floppy. Let me share my trick with you and you can do this to already made garments too.
What I will do is make a small buttonhole, you can even do this with an awl (I would just cut a hole raw) where you want the button to go. Then once you cut an opening, slip the button shank into the hole and slip a safety pin through the loop and close it. Now you are done, the button should sit more flush with the fabric. There are three more ways to do this. 1) They make special safety pins, maybe by Diaz for this. It has a little hump in the metal where the shank sits. 2) You can get small cotter pins (I have a collection of them scavenged from odd button cards) . They used to use this technique to attach buttons to cards for selling before they got cheap and now just use wire. You can also see this in military dress uniforms.3) This one can be a little trickier but is better for thicker fabrics and can be see in most well made winter coats and is similar to some cufflinks, in this method you sew another FLAT button to the back inside the garment and that holds the shank to the back of the fabric.

I don’t like to get into cosplay drama. I might weigh in on a few things in 2025 but not really drama drama, but a friend of mine wanted my opinion on this situation happening at a con in AZ that was posted on THREADS a few weeks back.
THE STORY
It is pretty short, a cosplay guest at a convention entered the craftsmanship competition and won Best in Show, and people were upset.
For me there are two ways to look at it: the actual rule side and a moral side.
For me I would not enter a competition at a con I am guesting at that year. If I have guested at the con BEFORE and I thought it would be a challenging field, then I would compete there in the future. As a guest, the con usually wants you to do things to make the attendees experience more enjoyable like panels or meetups so there usually is not enough time for a cosplayer who is a guest to enter any competition, which can be an all day event.
Form a rules perspective, if there is no rule against a guest entering craftsmanship then go for it. This cosplayer did not sneak in. The cosplay community is small and the craftsmanship circuit is smaller. The cosplay organizer is usually the one organizing all of the cosplay events, like inviting guests, getting judges for cosplay competition and the craftsmanship registration. The organizer would know who is competing, the judges know who the guests are and are sometimes guests themselves. Most cons DO HAVE A RULE ABOUT THIS.
I would say that this con needs to look at the rules and reevaluate them. This could be because the competition is relatively new ( I could only find the con existing since 2022), so they have not worked out the kinks, it could also be that then the Show Runner is new and didn’t think this was a thing. I can’t find the rules for the cosplay competition so I can not say 100% what went wrong but this leaves a bad taste, ABSOLUTELY.

…. My house is only so big… 🤣🤣🤣
I know I post this every year, but I still love it, and it still makes me laugh. With a cosplay, this big something had to go, and it was our tree, but I still love decorating for the holidays, so, Ta Da, you are welcome. I know you didn’t know that this is what you need but now you do.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE, are we ready for it?
just popped in to show off my Jack Skellington cosplay. We have a big weekend coming up. Tomorrow, I will be driving to set up for RICC, starting on Firday. I have a few things to finish up, and my husband will be showing off his new cosplay for the first time.
But don't worry #nightmarebeforechristmas is a now to Christmas thing, so their will be a lot more to come 😉
If you missed the batty scarves, they will be back in time to share them with your spooky friends for Christmas. A lot is happening

Not going to lie, I was a little hurt that no one appreciated my Alastor and Rosie video. I want to tell myself that no one realized it was the same person doing both characters. It took me so long to figure out how to put it together. I spent an hour on the makeup for each, and like an idiot I wanted to do this by myself, so I had to put both these on by myself.

So I made these little slides, which you can see in my story highlights to give a rough side by side. These are only some of the pieces in there, I have a few most to post. I know people love side by sides and to see interpretation even if they don't know the character, and it is also an easy way to see cosplays I have done. There are more indepth write ups on Alastor, Merida, and soon Poison Ivy on my website.

Because of their uniqueness, it is hard to put them on my website, but I will be posting all the pretty made combos soon, so check stories and highlights to let me know if you want one
Give me a 🩸🩸🩸 if you love the look 😉 and maybe want one
