As a flower farmers, we can’t help but admire and analyze fresh bouquets at various businesses when we’re out and about. We LOVE seeing local flowers this time of year at local shops.

After touring this morning, a latte and blueberry carrot muffin was as refreshing as this locally cultivated bouquet at on Michigan Ave. We love how they used current bloomers: amaranthus, cornflower and ammi. These beauties won’t be gracing us with their presence in a couple months’ time.

Can you spot the amaranthus in some of our recent arrangements (pics 2 & 3)? We are growing three varieties this season: ‘Hot Biscuits’, ‘Opopeo’, and ‘Coral Fountains’ and I still can’t decide which is my favorite!

This week’s market bouquets look like what I imagine one could pick on a gorgeous summer day, wandering through my imaginary meadow. But in reality, these flowers just don’t pop up in a meadow, all together, in these cultivars that will last in a vase to share their glory. They take serious planning, care and cultivation!

With no market this week due to the holiday, if you aren’t a subscriber, you are in luck because we have several extra bouquets waiting for you in the shed - Ed’s Garden Shed - at the farm in Hartland. Pick one up between 8:30 - 5:00 Thursday-Saturday… or until they last. DM for the farm address.

From the Meadow: Campanula, Chantilly Snapdragons, Spotted Bee Balm, Ammi, Love-in-a-Mist, Yarrow, Baptisia, Bupleurem, Stock, Feverfew and a few others

(3/3) After years of growth and gardening in our separate ways and places, our paths converged again in 2021, as I prepared for the birth of my first child and considered taking a pause from my corporate job as a product manager while I transitioned to motherhood. I had worked for several years through college at a dreamy greenhouse/florist and studied horticulture at MSU, so now I dreamed of how I could incorporate more plants and flowers as well as my love for small business into this next stage of my life. My older sister then gifted me a load of seeds from , and it was just the nudge we needed to take a leap, plotting out a portion of the fields that I grew up building stick forts on and committing to a trial season of flower farming at scale.

Needless to say, we were hooked! Now, much more knowledge and experience behind us and with two little girls in tow, we’re embarking on our fourth season of cut flower farming. We are particularly passionate about bringing blooms to our local communities that have fallen out of common use or that are unusual to find at bigger box florist shops/grocery stores.

Gardening continues to be a comforting rhythm of our lives and a common passion we’ve shared. We love poring over seed catalogs in January, dreaming up new ventures together, getting our hands back in the dirt each spring, tweaking our process along the way, and most of all, making new friends while sharing over-abundant harvests.

1 That first “trial field” in 2021 that produced way more blooms than we were prepared to handle!
2 Planting our first dahlia seedlings in 2021.
3 My sister guilty of gifting the first flower seeds that started this all off😆

(2/3) While my Grandpa Ed shared his love of gardening with my mom during her growing-up years in rural Nebraska, she later carried a chunk of his rhubarb plant, baggies of his zinnia seeds, a few of his canna bulbs, and her own love of cultivation with her when the auto industry took her own family across the country to Michigan.

There she cultivated her own (huge) veggie garden, expanding the plot nearly every year while also designing and redesigning the landscaping (and interior) of the house she and my dad built in the early 90’s, where they raised me and my older 2 siblings.

This is where I followed along through the seasons, measuring the daily growth of our Bleeding Heart plant in the springtime, dropping bean seeds into the furrow behind mom, searching together for buried potato treasures, and harvesting and drying herbs for winter use. Eventually we found ourselves poring over gardening books side by side and dreaming up “someday” business ventures over cups of tea.

One of these ideas included a garden “shed” that quickly got out of hand in our design imaginations and somehow ended up with official architectural plans, an adorable chimney, and a loft for my future kids to sleep over at Grandma’s house in….

2 Me in my barefoot, prairie muffin element complete with… headscarf?

(1/3) Our origin story starts with our namesake, Ed, my grandpa and my mom’s (Yvonne’s) dad. As you perhaps can tell from these photos, he was a steady, supportive, generous presence in our lives, always ready to love us by building a fence or garden cabinet with his daughter or the latest desired doll accessory for his granddaughters.

Grandpa Ed cultivated a garden all his life, from north Germany to rural Nebraska, even into his later years, dusting off potatoes or snapping beans as he sat next to Yvonne’s garden in Michigan - “supervising.”😉 The garden (as well as his wood shop) was one of his happy places, and he passed his love of cultivating, sowing, and harvesting to us.

He is our inspiration, and we can’t wait to share the joy of gardening with him again someday.

2/3 Ed & Yvonne with the garden cupboard they designed and built for my mom from scrap wood, still in use today.

As we embark on our fourth season of cut flower farming, I realized that we haven’t introduced ourselves or told our origin story in a while, so buckle up for a mini “intro-series” this week.

If you already know the story, here’s a throwback of me (the one in the wheelbarrow having the most fun and doing the least work) doing our weekly grass pickup routine with my older brother and sister.

Happy Valentine’s Day! We hope that your day involves fresh flowers and time with the ones you love!

💕 While I don’t love some of the commercialization of this holiday, I do enjoy that flowers are consistently one of the ways we as humans find to communicate our appreciation and affection for those we care about, and how that hasn’t changed over decades (centuries?! I’m no historian…). This is one of the many reasons we love working with flowers - the ability to share so much joy and appreciation with so many others in our lives. We hope you take time to do the same today, with flowers or words or both!

More non-photogenic winter tasks include disinfecting and prepping tons of seed trays.

Usually I try to do this one when it’s still pleasant outside in the fall, but since I was very pregnant this year at that time, here we are in January: bleaching & rinsing & drying to make sure we don’t pass on unwanted viruses from season to season. With some AirPods and an audiobook, it actually wasn’t too bad of a task today and feels good to be one step closer to planting in a couple of weeks! 💪🏽

Surviving negative-windchill, January-hibernation by reminiscing about scenes like this and polishing up my seed starting schedule.

I start my first seeds in my basement around the end of February and it can’t come soon enough! I’m upgrading some of my lighting and fertilizing this year and am excited to see the impact on my basement seedlings. Hoping it means even stronger flower babes when we transition them outside, which could mean blooms in your hands even earlier!

What flowers are you daydreaming about the most right now?

NEW: Autumn wreaths are here! Our wreaths are handmade entirely from flowers dried from our fields this season (with the exception of the frames). These are a few of our favorites so far - several of which are already spoken for, but read on for details on how to get your own!

What sizes and prices are available?
🌼 8-10” Twig framed wreath (photos 2 & 4) - $25
🌼 12-14” Twig framed wreath (photos 1 & 3) - $40
🌼 20-22” Everlasting wreath, wire frame (photos 6-7) - $55-60 depending on final size

How long will they last?
When kept dry and out of direct sunlight, they’ll keep for a long time (ok, we don’t have an exact time frame, but my front door wreath from last year still looks as fresh as day 1!).

How can I get one?
DM/email/text us today to order your preferred size (some color preference is available too), as we’re making these to order. Pickup is available in Hartland or Canton.

We expanded our sunflower planting this season, gotbetter about succession planting (planting smaller batches every 2 weeks for 2ish months), and have so loved these happy faces as they bloom. Despite bunnies snacking on a bunch of them, slugs on another bunch, and learning that we need to plant them so much closer together for a useable size, they’ve brought so much joy.

What an absolute TREAT to share this gorgeous golden hour with fellow flower lovers last night. The rain cleared just in time, the field was practically showing off as the sun emerged, and it was such a gift to play with flowers with such a lovely and talented group.
