Do You See Me has only 5 SEATS LEFT! Ticket link in bio!

From , creator of DYSM:

I know almost every single audience member so far and I am honored to have them participate in this event.

These solos are so personal and there is so much to unpack in what will be performed, I really wanted this to feel more like a film festival premiere. So, it should go something like this:

We’ll perform our solos, and then all of the performers will be seated onstage and our MC will lead a discussion. We’ll talk in depth about how we created the show and why we wanted to share it. We’ll also give the audience the chance to share thoughts and interpretations and ask any questions.

Hartsville, I cannot wait to share my he(art) with you, and end the night feeling closer to you than I ever have before

is the director, writer, choreographer, and one of the dancers for DYSM. She even designed these shirts! What she just shared:

—Several years ago, while living in Brooklyn, I started teaching movement classes at a women’s shelter. I learned that the shelter needed a lot more financial support than it was getting, so I started to dream of creating some sort of variety or talent show that I could produce to raise funds for the shelter when I had a friend say, “I think I know someone you should talk to.”

Before you think more of me than you should, I didn’t end up doing the show, but the person my friend was suggesting I meet, was Dylan.

Dylan was the creator of Artsville and had been producing events for six years by the time I met him. I found him knee deep working on house concerts in NYC and South Carolina AND he was producing an annual songwriting competition.

I learned that the whole dadblang thing was born out of a desire to see a friend perform in a venue that valued not only the art that was being performed, but the artist himself.

After seeing how the artists were treated and helping out with a few of the shows, I learned that I had not even valued myself as a performer and artist the way that Artsville did theirs.

I started having the thought… what if something existed like this for dancers?!

Well, it’s many years later, but Dylan and I are doing it. We are giving the Artsville experience to dancers and the Hartsville community. It is for the community, but first, it’s for the artists.

We have an undeniable love and desire to serve artists (this includes people who would not consider themselves to be artists but don’t get us started on that tangent). To say, hey, if you think you needed permission to do this idea or try that, you don’t need permission. Just make something - TRY NEW THINGS. And let’s learn what it means to be GOOD art consumers - as well as art makers.

We’ve had a hard time figuring out what Artsville will look like in the future, but we have a few ideas, and it will probably look different than most might expect. But we WILL be here, using art to serve.

Some more thoughtful words from , creator of Do You See Me:

I have chosen my cast based off of a very specific criterion:

We are all older performers and dance isn’t our “main thing” anymore. I wanted to give these women a chance to BE SEEN again. Just because we aren’t pulling out all of our old tricks anymore, doesn’t mean our bodies can’t create beautiful, rich movement.

Our life experiences have added to our artistry and I’m incredibly proud of these women. Not only are they willing to dance and make themselves vulnerable to an audience through their bodies again, but they are willing to share their own deeply personal stories.

Phyllis Fields is a local theatre professor and actor who, again, lends us her years of experience and will be the “voice” accompanying each of our solos.

Her script is designed to give you a bit of context without spelling things out.

The intimacy of the experience will be assisted by our performance venue which is a privately owned barn.

I’ve been working super hard on all the details surrounding the performance itself.

From , the creator of Do You See Me:

I stepped away from dancing for several reasons. It had started to feel like I had just joined a rat race and lost track of why I even wanted to dance.

I slowly began to realize that I wanted more control of my time and artistic energy. I had said “yes” to a lot of opportunities for the purpose of gaining experience but it felt good to finally say, “You know what? I don’t have to say ‘yes’ anymore for those reasons.”

I’ve had a lot of experience and I’m grateful to everyone who gave me those opportunities, but I knew I was ready to use my own voice and to create opportunities for others.

I wasn’t sure when that would happen when I stepped away, but I knew it was gonna be a part of my future.

Well, here we are, folks. This is it. This is me coming back and saying the things that I want to say with the help and collaboration of some brave and generous artists.

This is my effort to connect with my community. It’s kind of wild to put my whole heart into something and share it. I’m proud of it, but it still gives me some tiny shivers when I wonder how it will be received. Who will take a chance on getting to know me and hearing what I have to say?

Well, that’s the whole point of the show. If you’re considering buying tickets, please grab them ASAP because the seating is very limited.
