is the director, writer, choreographer, and one of the dancers for DYSM. She even designed these shirts! What she just shared:
—Several years ago, while living in Brooklyn, I started teaching movement classes at a women’s shelter. I learned that the shelter needed a lot more financial support than it was getting, so I started to dream of creating some sort of variety or talent show that I could produce to raise funds for the shelter when I had a friend say, “I think I know someone you should talk to.”
Before you think more of me than you should, I didn’t end up doing the show, but the person my friend was suggesting I meet, was Dylan.
Dylan was the creator of Artsville and had been producing events for six years by the time I met him. I found him knee deep working on house concerts in NYC and South Carolina AND he was producing an annual songwriting competition.
I learned that the whole dadblang thing was born out of a desire to see a friend perform in a venue that valued not only the art that was being performed, but the artist himself.
After seeing how the artists were treated and helping out with a few of the shows, I learned that I had not even valued myself as a performer and artist the way that Artsville did theirs.
I started having the thought… what if something existed like this for dancers?!
Well, it’s many years later, but Dylan and I are doing it. We are giving the Artsville experience to dancers and the Hartsville community. It is for the community, but first, it’s for the artists.
We have an undeniable love and desire to serve artists (this includes people who would not consider themselves to be artists but don’t get us started on that tangent). To say, hey, if you think you needed permission to do this idea or try that, you don’t need permission. Just make something - TRY NEW THINGS. And let’s learn what it means to be GOOD art consumers - as well as art makers.
We’ve had a hard time figuring out what Artsville will look like in the future, but we have a few ideas, and it will probably look different than most might expect. But we WILL be here, using art to serve.
