Whirlwind Disc Golf: 42 years of leadership & excellence

Events: 30+ baskets, 36+ turf pads, cones, rope, flags, tables, tents, power -- everything a TD needs! Around age 9, I started playing catch with my Dad, whose technique was a weak, yet clean, inside flip (aka "chicken wing"). By 12, I was counting the number of street-side light poles I could reach with a white Wham-O 119g -- leaving more

than a few on neighbors' roofs. By 16, I was the self-proclaimed champion thrower on Carson High School's Senior Lawn, which female students with cafeteria trays dared not cross. At 18, I became notorious for throwing discs at the beach for hours and hours, until my friends would threaten to leave without me. In the fall of 1982 (age 21), I started the Frisbee Club at LA Harbor Community College. A new member organized a road trip to my first disc golf course -- Central Park in Huntington Beach -- and another member introduced me to John Giza, who traveled in competitive Overall circles. In the Spring(?) of 1983, at Alta Loma Park in Torrance, somebody interrupted our Discathon and MTA practice, to have us try out these new orange discs with beveled edges. I'd probably like it after I got used to it... Can I get back to practice now?" (Years later, I realized that the handful of test drives were either Eagle prototypes or first runs. Still don't know if the person with the orange discs was Tim or Dave or Harold...) Fast forward (somewhat chronological):
>> Competition: multiple world titles and world records, Discathon GOAT, ~8 PDGA MPO victories
>> Tournament Direction / Event Production: WFDF World Overall in San Francisco, NorCal Disc Golf Series; St. Judy Charity Tourney; so many demos & clinics!
>> Organizations: leader and/or member at WFDF, PDGA, DGCDG, many California clubs
>> Course Design: ~25 temp/tourney courses; co-designer at Golden Gate Park, China Peak, and 3 golf courses; lead designer at OTB Open & SFO Open (DGPT Elite Series), Oyster Bay, Monarch Bay, Gualala, Cali Hmong (Fresno); Antioch, Moraga (redesign); more designs in progress.
>> Retail: biggest mobile store in the world (over 10,000 discs!)
>> Innova Ambassador
>> Disc Golfer author: Course design and development
>> Industry Conference presenter: Elite Course Design

Great deals at Empire this month. The later you wait, the better it gets -- because the deals overlap and they combine!

I love it when procrastination is rewarded. :)

Another great holiday deal starts today: Spend $60, get a free storage box worth $15-20 (depending on which box you choose).

This goes on top of the deals already in effect! For example, if you buy two $24 T-shirts and a $12 disc ($60 total), you'd get one more $24 T-shirt and a $20 storage box for free.
..

A new holiday deal starts every Sunday and every deal continues through the end of the year. The deals can be combined!

The next deal starts tomorrow 12/3: Buy 2 starter sets or 2 T-shirts, get a 3rd free (equal/lesser value). We've added lots of new sets and new shirts this month for you to enjoy!

Each week, it only gets better. Each deal continues through the rest of the month, so you can get 2, 3, or even 4 deals on a single purchase. For example, if you don't shop until the 17th and you buy $100 worth of sets -- the nieces and nephews will dig it! -- you not only get some free sets, you also get the bonus items for both the $60 level (free storage box) and the $100 level (free bottle or mug).

Update on the Black Friday goodies: We still have a few stock and special edition Time Lapse , but we've sold out the 2023 Gyropalooza boxes. As a consolation, we still have the 2021 and 2022 Gyropalooza at a nice discount.

Our Story

Around age 9, I started playing catch with my Dad, whose technique was clean, inside flip (aka "chicken wing") that maxed out around 40 feet. By 12, I was measuring the distance of my Wham-O 119g hucks by the number of street lights, leaving several attempts on neighbors' roofs. By 16, I was the self-proclaimed Frisbee champion of Carson High School's Senior Lawn, which female students with cafeteria trays dared not cross. At 18, I became notorious for "playing with myself" at the beach all afternoon -- MTA over the waves -- until my friends would threaten to leave without me. In the fall of 1981, age 20, I started the Frisbee Club at LA Harbor Community College. A new member organized a road trip to my first disc golf course, Central Park in Huntington Beach. The following year, another member connected me with John Giza, a freestyler who introduced me to the other six events held in overall competitions.

In the Spring(?) of 1983, at Alta Loma Park in Torrance, somebody interrupted our practice of Discathon and MTA -- woo-hoo, "playing with myself" is a competitive event! -- to have us try out these small orange discs with beveled edges. I gave them a few flings. "Yeah, it flies ok, kinda cool. I'd probably like it after I got used to it... Can I get back to practice now?" (Years later, I realized these test drives were probably Eagle prototypes or first runs. D'oh! And I still don't know if the person with the orange discs was Tim or Dave or Harold...) Fast forward: >> Competition: world titles and world records in overall events, Discathon GOAT, and 8 PDGA Open wins >> TD/ Event Production: WFDF World Overall in San Francisco, NorCal Disc Golf Series, St. Jude Charity Disc Golf tourneys, so many demos & clinics! >> Organizations: leader and/or member at WFDF, PDGA, many many California clubs >> Course Design: ~25 temp/tourney courses; lead designer at Gleneagles, Oyster Bay, Gualala, Antioch, Gehringer; co-designer at Golden Gate Park, China Peak, Emerald Hills, Lake Chabot, Sunrise. Four more in progress. >> Mobile Retail: Biggest pop-up store in California -- maybe anywhere? -- so many happy customers!
