Warm wedding wishes everyone! This felt like a perfect day to highlight the gorgeous, romantic winter/holiday style of Madison and Michael’s wedding at the Detroit Athletic Club. It’s hard to deny that snowy winter days are just the most romantic.

There are so many vibrant, timeless, gorgeous decisions that went into Madison and Rey’s wedding design, which made photographing it a dream. But the thing that stands out the most, and that makes me so proud of these images, is the unbridled joy on their faces.

I say it all the time, but it’s always just as true every time: Beautiful images of a day you didn’t enjoy are meaningless. Plan the most joyful day possible, and then make it beautiful—not the other way around.

Yet again I’m stunned by how well couples are able to infuse their wedding with their personalities and still maintain “black tie traditional.” Somehow, Hannah and Levi’s over the top maximalism in their florals and design fit perfectly with their classic black tie tent wedding in their backyard. Perfection.

I’m not sure patience comes easily to anyone, and that is never more true than for a couple on their wedding day. Mike and Jessica have been together for almost 9 years, and it was even years before that that she saw him across a room and had a “the whole room froze” moment, so I suppose patience might be their strong suit.

So when it started raining at sunrise on their wedding day and didn’t show signs of stopping, even as the day wore on, they just patiently waited inside until, miraculously, 5 minutes before the ceremony was to start, the rain stopped. They had their idyllic outdoor ceremony under the tree, the weather was beautiful for the rest of the day, and their wedding ended up being more stunning and joyful than they could have hoped.

Some days the rain might not stop, but once in a while, if you’re patient enough, you get exactly what you were hoping for.

Eloise and Bo tied the knot in the gorgeous area at the top of Michigan’s thumb, Port Austin, where Eloise’s family shares a special heirloom home. The idea of having a beautiful wedding weekend with fun, summer camp energy is something I hear a lot of people talk about, and now I really understand it. If you have the chance, I highly recommend it, especially if you can get a duo like and to pull it off to perfection!

Katherine and Michael shared their first kiss at Straits Chapel, walked down the aisle, out the door, and straight to their waiting car to run off and spend a few quiet minutes alone before all of their guests arrived. They’re as romantic as they are practical, and honestly I love that for them.

After taking off most of March and April to spend some much-overdue time with my family, Mikaylah and Ian were my first wedding of the busy season, and it could not have been more of a dream! The bow detail on the back of her dress, their adorable chemistry, the idyllic venue, and a million more things—it reminded me all over again why I truly love what I do. It’s gonna be a good year, friends. ♥️

While it’s critical to make sure your wedding photographer can create compelling photos in any light, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be intentional with your lighting choices.

One way to help your photographer, especially during the reception, is to light from within your design, rather than just shining lights onto everything. One delightful way of doing that — lamps! Sophie and Pierce wanted their reception to have the feeling of one of those grand NYC libraries, and the unstoppable team at Ines & Marie did just that with these perfect little dome lamps.

Incorporate more lamps in your wedding, and your photographer will love you forever. 😊

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who appreciates natural light on a wedding day more than me. And yet, every time I work with a couple who leans into a darker, glowy, candlelight aesthetic, I become obsessed with the results. So here’s to a 2024 season full of finding the beauty in all of it.
