This week the White House Council on Environmental Quality announced that the North Coast Strongholds Initiative, a package of high-impact projects by TU and partners to restore salmon and steelhead habitat on California’s North Coast, is one of 10 Transformational Fish Passage Projects across the country that the Biden-Harris Administration is highlighting as key to helping ecosystems recover and making communities more resilient in the face of climate change.
The Strongholds Initiative was developed by TU, , and , working together as the California Salmon and Steelhead Coalition, in collaboration with the California Department of Natural Resources. The Coalition has been working to address threats to native salmonids on a landscape level for the past decade.
Trout Unlimited is a leading partner in six of the ten projects nationwide, where millions of dollars in investments made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act are increasing the pace of our work and the scale of our impact on trout and salmon, rivers and streams, and the communities that depend on them.
“Thanks to years of planning work by federal and state agencies, Tribes, and stakeholders, we largely know what needs to be done to restore the North Coast,” said Matt Clifford, California Director for Trout Unlimited. “The Strongholds initiative will jump start the sustained investment we need to put those plans into action.”
