The Heber Market on Main turns 25 years this year! Do you know the histroy of how we came to be? Keep reading to learn the origin of HMOM by Stacey MacKay of Bank of Utah Heber Branch our primary sponsor.

Paul Askins worked as a DJ for KPCW in Park City, and part of his job there was to MC at the concerts that Park City had going on. After a couple of years of that, Paul decided that he didn’t want to travel to Park City every week anymore to MC, so he decided to start the Concerts in the Park in Heber City in the summer of 1998. He spoke with fellow Rotarian Shelly Hisler, about getting help from the Bank she worked for, to pay the bands. Since then, banks have changed hands and people working at them have changed as well, but the desire to keep the Concerts in the Park going for the community has never wavered.

At first there were only about 10-20 people that attended the concerts. As the years went on and the concerts became something to look forward to every Thursday night during the summer, more and more families started coming. Since it began in 1998, Paul has been the person who booked the bands each year, until a few years ago when Heber City took over. He said he always tried to book local bands first, then bands in Park City, and then bands in other parts of Utah or in other parts of the country.

As a Rotarian in the Heber Valley Rotary Club, Paul talked to them about the possibility of building a bandstand in the Park. They loved the idea of doing this kind of service project for the community. Fellow Rotarian, George Bennett volunteered his time to do all of the architecture work associated with the project, and the Rotary Club partnered with Heber City, businesses, and people in the valley to raise enough money to build the bandstand. It was finished in 2005 and bands have been playing from there ever since. The bandstand at Heber City Main Street Park was officially dedicated as the “Heber Valley Rotary Club Bandstand” on July 9, 2015, with a sign placed on it to recognize the Heber Valley Rotary Club’s efforts on this local community project.

Bank of Utah has been a proud sponsor of the Concerts in the Park for many years. This event is very important to our community and we want it to continue for many years to come! Thanks to Paul Askins who brought Concerts in the Park to the Heber Valley, and for all his hard work and effort to make it what it is today. Even now, Paul rarely misses a concert. He loves the opportunity to gather with friends and family to see what Concert in the Parks has become.
