With the B-52s and DEVO playing at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater on Sunday, we thought we’d throw it back to Nov. 1982, when the B-52s played at Hofstra University on a double bill with The Ramones!!!

A brilliant professor here at Hofstra is Professor Mario Alfonso Murillo, a distinguished faculty member in Hofstra’s Radio, Television, Film department within the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication. He teaches courses in radio journalism, documentary production, media studies, and Latin American studies, guiding students to explore storytelling, culture, and social issues through media.

For many years, Professor Murillo has written extensively on topics including Latino culture, immigration, indigenous rights, community media, Latin American affairs, human rights, and U.S. foreign policy. His work has appeared in academic journals, edited volumes, newspapers, websites, and popular magazines both in the U.S. and internationally.

“Teaching some of my Latin American Media Studies-related courses within Honors College has been among the most rewarding experiences in my many years as a professor at Hofstra University, given the level of intellectual curiosity and student engagement with the many themes I’ve addressed in these classes. They range from courses looking at social movements and communication in Latin America to film studies courses exploring the long history of social documentary and narrative feature films in the region.”

Through his teaching and scholarship, Professor Murillo connects students to the power of media as a tool for cultural understanding, social justice, and global awareness. 🎓✨
