In the middle of an excellent concert in Atlanta on December 30, 1976 — Elvis’ final concert there, in the Omni, a venue where crowds always went particularly wild for him — someone in the audience presented Elvis with a birthday cake and the audience spontaneously started singing “Happy Birthday.” A week later Elvis celebrated his 42nd and final birthday in Palm Springs.

On this day 65 years ago; Elvis garnering massive viewership on Ed Sullivan’s TV show. This was his second appearance, the first being on September 9. His third and last (and last TV appearance until the Frank Sinatra “Welcome Home” special in 1960) was January 6, 1957 when he was, infamously, filmed only from the waist up.

He’d scandalize the nation (and gained record viewing audiences, which is why Ed Sullivan changed his mind about having him on his show) in June, 1956 when he performed the same song on the Milton Berle TV show, almost a full month before actually recording it in the studio. By now it and its flip side, “Don’t Be Cruel,” had become massive hits, two in a string that kept Elvis at the top of the charts throughout this year and catapulted him to unprecedented fame. He was widely hated and heavily criticized , but he sure was making a lot of people a lot of money. He somewhat toned down his normal performing style for the screen here, but it’s still fairly wild and intense stuff, and extremely jarring for the times.

From Saturday night -- a wedding reception in the Havana Room at the Tropicana -- where I had the distinct pleasure of playing two long sets with the Sons of Memphis, a San Diego-based band that specializes in Elvis tributes (through the constituent band members can, of course, play all sorts of music). It was absolutely great and something that I was looking forward to for many months. We incorporated our clients' song requests into our setlist and ended up with a great lineup of songs.

Singing at a wedding reception last night at the Bellagio's Grand Lakeview Suite. The bride and groom were from Perth, Western Australia, as were all the guests except five New Zealanders and two Brits. Never ceases to amaze that people will travel so far for such an occasion; very nice to behold. Most had never been to the US before, let alone Vegas.

The bride and her hard-working wedding planner had really outdone themselves with the room and its appointments. Among the features were several of those neo-Polaroid instant-picture cameras, the kind that shoot really small photos. I was on the booking with 'Frank Sinatra' -- CJ -- who grabbed this photo while I was performing. Between the two of us, we sang for over three hours. Fun!
