The Foothill Band Department consists of three concert/symphonic bands, three jazz ensembles, percussion ensembles, indoor drum line, color guard, and the state’s largest marching band. Today, the program consists of four concert/symphonic bands, three jazz ensembles, pep band, indoor drum line, color guards, and marching band. The concert and jazz ensembles consistently receive Superior Ratings a

t music festivals and the Falcon Marching Band is the largest band in Nevada with nearly 300 members. These ensembles have performed on the world famous Las Vegas Strip at Aria, Bally’s, Cosmopolitan, Paris, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, Caesar’s Palace, Planet Hollywood, and the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Falcon Marching Band is a 16-time Bands of America Regional Championship Finalist. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland and in 2012 appeared in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington D.C. The Foothill Band was one of only six high school bands selected to perform in the 2014 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and on January 2, 2017 the Foothill Marching Band was the first ever band from the Clark County School District to march in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. The Foothill Drum Line has been Finalist seven times in the WGI Percussion World Championships and was featured on national television (FOX) in the American Country Awards, performing with Trace Adkins. The Foothill Color Guard program consists of both Varsity and Junior Varsity groups that perform and compete throughout the Southwest. The Foothill Color Guards have won many competitions in the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC) and Winter Guard International (WGI). The Foothill Jazz Ensembles regularly perform and compete in southern Nevada and California and have participated in the Essentially Ellington Festivals in Utah and Nevada. In April of 2019, the Foothill Jazz Ensembles competed in the nationally recognized Reno Jazz Festival. In June of 2019, the Foothill Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Wind Symphony, and Symphonic Band performed concerts and parades in London, Paris, and Normandy as part of the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings. Members of the Foothill Wind Symphony and Symphonic Bands participate in the district Honor Bands, Nevada All State Ensembles, and are often Finalists and Winners in the State Solo & Ensemble contests. In 2010 the Foothill Wind Symphony commissioned and premiered “The Seal Lullaby” by Grammy Award winning composer, Eric Whitacre. On November 25, 2014 the Foothill Wind Symphony premiered “Psalm 92” by Anthony LaBounty in the world famous Carnegie Hall in New York. This concert also featured internationally recognized performing artist, Marie Osmond, soloing with the Foothill Wind Symphony. On February 25, 2015 the Foothill Pep Band appeared with the Rascal Flatts at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. In April of 2018, members of the Foothill Drum Line performed for Gwen Stefani at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino. On January 22, 2020 the Foothill Drum Line performed for celebrity chef, Guy Fieri, at his birthday celebration at his restaurant at Harrah’s. Additionally, the Foothill Performing Arts Department has been a Grammy Signature Schools Semi-Finalist.

We are pleased to announce that the Foothill Band Department is one of the 2024 Division Winners of the National Band Association Programs of Excellence Blue Ribbon Award.

Division Winners will be recognized at the NBA general membership meeting at 4 pm on Thursday, December 19, at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago.

Mourning the loss of our friend and teacher, Mr. Ken Giese. Rest in peace.

WGI Mourns the Passing of Ken Giese

Today, WGI is mourning the loss of Ken Giese, 62, a fixture in the marching arts for over four decades, after a courageous battle with ALS.

Born to Kenneth and Judith Giese in Racine, Wisconsin, Ken's journey into the world of drum corps began as a member of the Racine Kilties. There, he met Lynn and George Lindstrom, who would become the most influential figures in his life. They enlisted Ken as one of the first volunteers for a fledgling organization called Winter Guard International. His passion for judging first began in the Color Guard division and, most recently, as a valued WGI Percussion division team member. His dedication to the marching arts was a lifelong commitment.

Ken's impact as a nationally recognized visual caption adjudicator is without question, generously sharing his talents with Drum Corps International, Music for All/Bands of America, and local circuits and organizations throughout the United States and abroad. His role as a visual designer and instructor for numerous high school bands, winter guards, drum and bugle corps, and marching percussion groups has left a lasting impression.

Chief Executive Officer Ron Nankervis said, "Ken was unapologetically honest with the groups he adjudicated, even when that information wasn't the easiest to hear. Even with his most recent challenges, he did so with integrity, humor, grace, and courage. It is hard to picture our world without Ken Giese in it."

Outside of the marching arts, Ken held a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education, Mathematics, and Computer Science and a master’s degree in educational leadership. A Las Vegas, Nevada resident, he most recently taught Math, Color Guard, and Band at Ed W. Clark High School.

"Ken's contributions to the marching arts are unmeasurable. He was not only a great educator, designer, and judge but a great friend to so many. Ken's passion, commitment, and innovative spirit have left an indelible mark on WGI," said Mark Thurston, Director of Percussion. "Ken's legacy of inspiration will always continue to guide us. He will be missed."
