Here are a couple of photos from last Saturday. I was at my studio when the tornado passed. I was outside and it was calm, then the wind picked up a little and I heard the sound of a waterfall or loud engines coming from the west when normally the train sound comes from the north. I realized that is the sound people say they hear when a tornado is near. I rushed inside to make sure I had a straight shot to the bathroom (the only room in my studio without a window). Then the power went out, and I went back to the studio door to look outside. I heard the sound of a mighty wind and rain was coming down hard. As I stood by the entry door to my studio, I couldn't see much of anything because of the hard rain, but I was listening for things hitting the building or the sound of the building creaking or popping which would be my call to dash to the bathroom again but it never happened and after 30 seconds it was all over, there was just a steady rain, and then it got quiet and calm again. It was awesome, and we are so grateful that our place was not damaged.
These 2 photos were taken after the tornado passed. As you can see, there was still plenty of lightning in the area. The red lights you see in the second photo are reflecting off of the buildings along Main Street which is where the tornado made its path. We were just 6 buildings away. Most of the buildings on the south side of Main Street suffered little damage.

I've been going through some of my older images and I came across this one of a storm passing over Moss Wright Park in Goodlettsville. I can almost hear Dorothy yelling "Auntie Em, Autie Em"!

I went to the TNPPA Fall Convention a few weeks ago and learned that I need to be a little more connected. It seems my Facebook habits are lacking so here I am after the fact late as usual!

I entered the Collage Competition with images from a shoot I did with Ron Chlasta and his horse Trooper. Happily I won best of show!

It was good to see all of my friends in the TNPPA. I remember back when I was the new guy with this association and now it seems and an old timer! How did that happen?

Climbing a mountain sounds a lot harder these days. Here's a story from years ago.

When I was in the military, my platoon was sent up into the Santa Rosa Mountains of California for map and compass exercises. After one day’s exercise, we finished early. A few of us decided to climb to the top of a hill and see the view. It was steep with a lot of rock, but we were in great shape and after about 15 minutes we were within 10 feet of the top. That is when we heard a car pull up and doors open and close. As we pulled ourselves up to the top we met some older ladies enjoying the view. We learned a lot about map reading that day.

Here's another image from our time on Dauphin Island. I always enjoy seeing the Milky Way. I'm standing on the beach looking south into the Gulf of Mexico. The lights on the horizon are the oil rigs that shine in the distance.

I've already posted this on my personal page, but I thought I would share it here as well. We enjoyed our stay on Dauphin Island in Mobile Bay, Alabama. I took this photo one evening of a neighbor's house. The lights in the background are from Alabama communities across the intracoastal waterway of Mobile bay some 3-5 miles away. Dauphin Island is a great place to see the stars.

Taken with my Canon 5D Mk3, 20mm Sigma Art lens @ f2 for 6 seconds at ISO 2000, and processed in Photoshop's camera raw.

Yet another image from a trip to Greeter Falls in the Savage Gulf State Natural Area in Tennessee. Looking like a bodybuilder on steroids, the roots of this tree are massive as they hold on to the ground near the base of the Lower Greeter Falls. During the spring rains here the waterfall becomes a torrent that will challenge any tree in its path. It is amazing to see how the tree has adapted to the conditions in which the Almighty has placed it.

One more image for tonight. This is a multiple exposure of about 9 images of stream lined with trees. By moving the camera slightly for each exposure it gives the finished image an abstract impressionist look. I'm still trying new things and exploring the possibilities.

Another image of Greeter Falls. The first one here I posted a few days ago. It was taken with the lens set to 24mm, notice how the lens stretches the tree and the waterfall seem a long way away. The second image was taken after backing up a bit and setting the lens at 55mm. Notice how much closer the waterfall seems here when it is actually 20 feet further away than the first photo. The longer the lens setting in millimeters (mm) the more compressed the image becomes. Actually at 55mm the lens is not compressing the scene much because you are seeing the scene pretty close to the actual view of your eyes.
