I was told not too long ago that owning and running a wedding venue isnāt really a ājobā. At first it hurt my feelings and then I got angry. But as I thought about it, I began thinking, people donāt know what they donāt know. Running a venue isnāt all sunshine, flowers, happiness and joy. Itās long, hard hours that no one ever sees. So, I thought I would share what we do every week (sometimes twice a week). Iām sure Iāll forget some things.
Iāll start with the property. Thereās mowing, which some weeks has to be done twice a week. Thereās w**d eatingā¦the pond, the creek, the trees, the fire pit, around the venue (So thankful we were able to hire a young man this year to do the w**d eating for us!). Thereās keeping the flower beds w**ded and mulched. Thereās spraying for w**ds. Thereās watering ferns and window box flowers daily. And at least once each wedding season we do lawn aeration and fertilize to keep the grass looking like a āgolf courseā.
Inside the venue, thereās cleaning suites, cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms, sweeping, vacuuming, shampooing carpets, blowing out the reception area every day (sometimes more than once), washing the concrete floor in the reception area, cleaning countertops and tables, stocking and restocking, washing off the patio and the patio furniture, setting up tables, setting out chairs, putting up tables, picking up chairs, sides up, sides down, sides up again, repairs and trashā¦lots of trash. Some weeks there is picking up cigarette butts off the groundsš, cleaning up vomit š¤®, picking up trash thrown in the parking lot š¤, searching for corn hole bags and horse shoes, š and fixing holes in the wallsš .
Thereās parking, maning the fire pit, tours, bookings š, phone calls, emails, social media, paperwork. Being day of coordinator adds hours of prep work, phone calls with your bride, phone calls with vendors, paperwork, rehearsal, and all day on the ceremony day. Letās not forget an all-inclusive wedding. Being trusted to give the bride and groom the day theyāve always dreamed of. Itās months and months of planning, talking, organizing, booking, striving to pull off that perfect day. And then you spend hours and hours decorating and making it as beautiful as that Pinterest board sent to you from your bride.
Itās missing out on vacations, hikes, cookouts, time with family and friends, āfun and relaxationā!
So, if you are a venue owner, I SEE YOU!!! I see how thankful but tired you are. I know that you do so many things behind the scenes that no one ever sees or thinks about. But, I also know, that when the bride and groom comes to you at the end of their night and you hear, with tears in their eyes, āThank you! It was more than we could have ever imagined!!ā
That makes all the long days and nights, the achy, swollen feet, totally worth it and a āJOBā well done.
