Having had more than my fill of flowers for a several days, I wasn’t chomping at the bit to do anything with the leftover wedding flowers that Janet generously sent me home with this past weekend. I got a wake up call that my window of opportunity was closing when I woke up this morning to several wilted hydrangeas. Not willing to give up on them quite yet, I gave them a fresh cut, put them in hot water, removed any extra foliage, and misted their heads. Before long, they were as good as new and ready to embark upon their next life in an arrangement. Any guesses how long the complete resuscitation took?’

I so enjoyed helping Janet Minock with one of her weddings this past weekend. I guess you could say that David Pippin and I were Janet’s Sous Florists. She deserves major props for making this all come together so seamlessly and beautifully!!!!

A little mood lighting on Sunday’s demonstration. The green that I used throughout this arrangement was basil. A participant asked if it would hold up in floral foam and I guessed that the answer was no simply because a lot of garden flowers (which included every single stem at our workshop) tend to be a little more tender and thirsty than florist flowers. Well boy was I wrong. The basil in the bottom tier of this arrangement was [admittedly] in floral foam and is just as fresh today as it was on Sunday.

Guess I’ll take one for the team and help out the cause. 🙃I’m in love with this new unusual peach zinnia with almost tubular petals that Mom grew from seed . It’s called “Pink Senorita”, which seems more than appropriate

Recently I’ve been trying different ways to economically secure basic test tubes in standard-sized taper candlestick holders, because I think the overall effect of floating flowers is super appealing. After several failed attempts with specialty double-sided tape, museum gel, hot glue and more, I’ve finally landed on little cutout circles of packing material. So… here we are with a candelabra economically outfitted with tubes. Necessity and frugality = the mother of invention! 😅

The only unifying feature of this arrangement is that these are the sole survivors from last weekend’s wedding, which have not only been stored at room temp since the wedding, but also were originally received 10 days ago. Now that’s flora-life longevity!

If you don’t like it FIX IT! I first made the mass arrangement and decided that I just plain did not like it. It was too controlled and just meh. 🫤 So… I deconstructed it and took an entirely different approach - 4 little wild arrangements using the same flowers. Ahhh now that feels better

Transform any taper candlestick holder into a vase with test tubes fitted with special tape. Not as nicely packaged and styled as The Base Vase, which we hope to carry again when their distribution recovers from overwhelming sales resulting from a viral video, but it does the trick and costs a fraction of the price.

Paving with Flowers

In my opinion, this is one of the easiest and least material intensive arranging styles – Pavé. Basically think of a cobblestone street being paved with stones, but rather an arrangement being paved with a flowers. Another bonus is that there’s no question whether or not guests will be able to see over this one!

It’s not over till it’s over!!! These little gems are remnants from the previous two posts.

Started the year off with a private arranging workshop in celebration of a milestone birthday. The colors we chose were anything but Christmas! We ❤️ our venue!!!! Hanover Arts and Activities Center

A customer gave me her gorgeous (and humongous) coffee table bowl to create an arrangement in. It ended up being so big I could hardly walk up the stairs to deliver it

Yesterday’s arrangement completely deconstructed. Evolving arrangements - if you even dabble in floral design, you know it’s a thing! Your mood shifts - the arrangement changes. Something dies - the arrangement changes. You buy a new table runner - the arrangement changes 😉

You never know what gifts await if you're paying attention - and every once in a while I am. The light was what first got my attention, and then of course the color. I had an "experience" in downtown Short Pump today. I know - shocking. The point... you just never know when or where... #lookup

After a weekend of crazy outside the box arranging, it was kind of nice to create these classic romantic arrangements for an engagement party at the VMFA.

This turned out to be a surprisingly fun experiment. The video is just a compilation of still shots. Early into the process, I realized that there was one extremely limiting factor – once you insert a stem there’s no going back. All editing options are off the table. Honestly, it was kind of liberating. . . . Mechanics: my trusty hairpin frog (@floralgeniusig) and chicken wire

The epic summer showdown: cicadas vs. the lawn mower. Victory = cicadas!!! 🏆 Silly lawnmower, you’re no match for the relentless cicada chorus.

With all spring and now summer work events officially canceled [boo-hoo], I’m giving another job a try - annual and perennial (potted) flower sales and delivery. The way it works: I consolidate customer orders into a large wholesale order. The wholesaler delivers to me, and I in turn deliver to customers within 15 miles of Short Pump (pickup is also available). Completely contact-less!
