What does Highland Park's band The Do Rights and HP's Interfaith-RISE have in common? Probably lots of things. Beauty, grace, a commitment to create a real, and deep sound--a real and deep soul.

On November 3rd, The Do Rights are showing their love for Interfaith-RISE by holding a concert at the end of the Interfaith-RISE Walk for Refugees.

Join us, starting at 2pm, to take a beautiful walk through town, holding high signs of support for refugees and taking in the stories of those who have come to be our neighbors. Then, around 3:45 or so, join us at RCHP for a Do Rights concert.

I'm excited and I hope you are as well.

Peace, seth

This November ELECT to support refugees and immigrants the world over. Elect to make sure that our neighborhoods, cities, states and nation are a place where people can make a fresh start if that is necessary.

I'd prefer a world where the superpowers (ours included) create less refugee crises through war, greed and other aspects of disaster capitalism. I hope and pray that we all, in manifold ways, continue to fight the aspects of Empire that create the forcible displacement of people and contribute to such suffering.

But, it is possible to rage against the machines of the empire and simultaneously go all-in in terms of support for those who, due to a plethora of factors, end up here, ready to live the next phase of their lives as our neighbors and friends.

Please support Interfaith-RISE. I'd love as many people as possible to join us for the Walk for Refugees on November 3rd. But, please don't want until the 3rd to make a financial contribution. We'd love to announce, on November 3rd, the incredible levels of generosity that have poured in to support this work!

Peace, seth

Friends, Refugees and immigrants are a blessing (not a burden). That is not the messaging you'll here as we near the election in November. But it is the truth.

Whether it is Springfield, Ohio, or New York City, people coming here offer so much!

A few years ago, when I was running for a political office, all the talk was about 'the great exodus from New Jersey.' 'People cannot afford to live here'--things like that were constantly said.

That's not the way refugees and immigrants feel. People who make it here, as refugees and asylum seekers, have tremendous drive.

I think it's time to reframe how we see refugees and immigrants generally. Yes, many who make it here have just come through a traumatic experience (political upheaval, war, gender based violence etc...) but a tremendous number of those same people don't expect to be defined by their traumatic moment, but rather by a lifetime of strengths, skills, knowledge, experiences.

Interfaith-RISE is an organization that helps new arrivals live into their 'best selves' and to quickly make the adjustments that are inevitable when you've been uprooted. We are working with people who--with a little front end support--will thrive. And, within a very short time, they are making NJ an ever-better place.

Come out, on November 3rd, and walk with us, in celebration of refuges. And, GIVE GENEROUSLY. We have already raised our first $20,000. This next year (a fiscal year that starts on October 1--as in 4 days fro now) we will help 900 refugees 'start well' in NJ. How can we handle so many? Because, in a very short time, at least 85% of those folks will full self-sufficient...contributing far more to the economy, the community, the NJ culture than they will have received in no time at all.

Friends,

I am continually inspired by the people who come into my life and help shape me.

Edgar Aquino Huerta is a terrific part of the Interfaith-RISE team, and he is one heck of a film maker.

We are proud to announce that Edgar Aquino Huerta, aspiring filmmaker, has won the Grand Prize of the U.S.-Mexico Kaleidoscope Binational Short Film Contest & Festival for his film “Made in America”.

As one reviewer describes it: “Made in America” tells the story of an undocumented student who is in college, but his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) hasn’t been renewed, thus he finds himself in the middle of an immigration raid at his job. This film was written and directed by Rowan University alumni Edgar Aquino Huerta. It aims to give a voice to those who have gone through similar experiences.”

You can view the trailer here. Edgar’s film will be showcased at various screenings in the U.S. and Mexico over the next few months. Congratulations to Edgar!

Into this once-again negative space of racism and xenophobia I invite you to continue supporting Interfaith-RISE.

Immigrants and refugees are a blessing to this country, and a little help on the front end helps make the transition to this country so much better.
