We were shocked and saddened yesterday to hear that our friends at Quest Escapes Cibolo (formerly Kwest Club) have closed their doors. Unfortunately, 2024 has stolen two local gems from San Antonio escape room enthusiasts, as Boerne Escape Rooms shut down earlier this year.

As enthusiasts ourselves, this got us thinking about the hallmarks of small businesses in the escape room industry. Peek behind the scenes of a small business escape room and you're likely to find:

1. Passion for the Game - one thing we've seen over and over again meeting other local escape room owners is the passion that they have for escape rooms and sharing that passion with others. So many people have never played an escape room and, if you want to see what all the fuss is about, a small business is a great place to start!

2. Something Unique - small business escape room owners have poured their heart and soul into their rooms, meticulously designing, building, and maintaining each of their escape rooms, from the first discussion of theme, to beta testing, to adjustments to improve game play and address pain points along the way. Their rooms will not be found at another location, so you have the opportunity to experience something different.

3. Dedication to Player Experience - word of mouth referrals are essential for small businesses, so we do everything in our power to ensure that everyone has a great experience - from hiring engaging game masters, to sneaking a little surprise into a room for a party's guest of honor, to adjusting the ending of a room to accommodate a player's special request. (We once worked a gender reveal into the final puzzle for one of our rooms!) 🎉
