yesterday I was with my friend and we saw this huuuge vibrant rainbow over Palehua. came down the hill not twenty minutes later and found gold tangled on landscaped pohinahina. couldn’t believe my eyes. I hope it’s still there when I get back so we can move some to grow more by the beach!
my last minutes on Oʻahu were used to make this lei for my sister before she headed out to the continent. what a good feeling to find, make and give this lei kaunaʻoa to my dear one 🌈✨🍯✨🌼✨

Good morning! Wanted to share the fun crafting experiences we had this weekend at Kīpuka 🍁 on Friday we held our first wreath workshop with new makers using things we gathered throughout the week. Had a great time seeing everyone discover their own crafting skills while enjoying each other’s company. Was happy to host such a sweet group of people who truly appreciated the experience💫

The next day, I joined my halau as kumu taught the community weaving workshop using lau niu as the wreath base. Kumu Kaui comes from a long line of master lauhala & lau niu weavers and got the leaves from her grandson who continues their family tradition. We brought leftover materials from the night before to share as inserts to the finished wreaths.
Luckily, uncle Ben, a master lei maker I met through aunty Maile of and was passing by and stopped in to say hello. He couldn’t help himself and started to show us all up in designing and building elaborate pieces and fancy bows with whatever was near him. I had an extra straw base so he made one that we gave to Nā Mea. Many of the makers had him decorate their wreaths because as you can see, he is truly gifted.

The thing I love about makers workshops is how they bring people together to share ideas, experiences and knowledge sharing that allows everyone to shine in self discovery. Mahalo piha for opening your doors to the community and giving us all a space to connect at Kīpuka 🫶🏽

Had the honor to meet uncle as we shared space and exchanged art & philosophies 🌿 I cannot thank (especially Josh Tengen & Rosina Potter) enough for all their hospitality and inclusion of my work in their programming for the 2024 Art Summit during FestPac.

Uncle Kahi’s reflection of our beloved Bernice Takamine reminded us of the fine line of balance and continuity in our lifetimes. We must observe our environments, including each living being that surround us, and recognize their impact on us. There is no light without darkness, no happiness without sadness.

Uncle Kahi emphasized the importance of the relationships in our lives that not only help, but allow us to thrive. Love & respect to all who gathered during this summit to evoke the connectedness of Oceania and the past and present before us. E Ola!
